Posted: Thu, 3rd Jun 2010 00:32 Post subject: Cover shooters are an insult to PC gamers! |
|
 |
Yes, the title is a bit provocative, but it is true. Not all games, that use cover systems are cover shooters. Those games are cover shooters, where the main mechanic is cover, notably Gears of War and games, where you hide behind something, then exchange fire, but you can't go out in the open, because you get killed instantly.
Yes, that's realistic, I don't doubt that, but I'm not a realism nut, and I think nothing beat the original UT in multiplayer goodness.
So if it's realistic, why is it an insult? Well, because it's console crap. The argument is simple:
Console frat boys simply can't do the stuff from a pad, that a m+k can. Not even close. I saw good people play scout in tf2 on the couchbox, and it was laughable. It limits gameplay enormously, to say the least. The problem is simple. Playing a classic FPS on the console (aside from a few noteworthy exceptions) is boring. You can't turn enough, you miss too much, all in all it feels very sucky and boring. So something had to be invented.
And long came cover mechanics. Frat boys no longer needed to be intimidated by *gulp* moving and shooting at once. No sir, now they can simply hide, rest their left hand and shoot a bit with the right hand, then later, when they want to move, they rest the right hand... etc.
So then a few years pass, and many of the tripple A titles (even RPGs) have fucking cover shooter gameplay. That means, I can't use the m&k for what it was intended. All of a sudden, I have a skill ceiling.
Three things differentiated the UT or even q3a gamers: 1. their ability to aim 2. their ability to dodge 3. situational and geographical awareness. Man, have I seen some crazy stunts by really awesome players in UT. Jumping from ledge to ledge, avoiding being shot at, feinting enemies an at the same time killing. Reading this last sentence took longer, than how much it takes awesome players to pull it off.
In comes cover based shooting, and two of these elements are out! Complete borefest, but hey, at least retarded couchbox padboys have a shot at glory like this.
I completely hate cover based gameplay, and more and more such games creep their way onto the PC. Fkin consoles, eh?

I've got nothing against a cover system when it's used properly and tactically -- but it never is. A cover system is now just a shield for console tards with low reaction time due to crappy controls. Games are now built around cover systems, rather than the opposite.
It's pathetic but sadly not going anyway any time soon.

It's been too long, since cover was used tactically. In fact, the best cover system is in Company of Heroes .
Yes, cover is made so bad reaction time and sloppy controls can be balanced, but with it, a serious skill ceiling is introduced on the PC. Moving, positioning and shooting while doing that is no longer needed. Hell, UT3 players are called an irrelevant hardcore, but back in '99 UT was the standard player's game. (or q3)
Times, they are a changin'.

That's silly too, but it changes the health metagame, not the main gameplay.

Hear hear! "Pop and pop, pop, pop" kind of games are like a cancer!
I had a discussion once with the "usual suspects", apparently these console tards think a game is not advanced enough because it doesn't have a cover system.

I think the problem is that the system is not implented in first person view, insteed we have a fpw and when it goes to cover it zooms out makes it a 3d person view...which in its turn make you see things you wouldn't do from your eyes behind cover.
Killzone 2 did implent this great, you still are in fps-view while in cover.

Call of Juarez had good cover system too, not this "snap to third person perspective" bullshit.

Yeah, that was what I was just thinking, they did very good job with the cover in CoJ BiB.

Don't forget dark athena, it had a nice cover system too, it took some getting used to and precise movement sometimes, but it worked great

Exactly, probably the best use of a cover system I've ever seen
As for the actual consoletard cover model, can we safely say that "it's all Kill Switch's fault"?

No, that one was an insignificant game. GoW and the usual suspects who played it and LOVED it.

I don't mind cover system in single player games. It would bother me in multiplayer though.

I wouldn't mind the cover system if it didn't allow you super mutant abilities to see 4 miles down a road while still ducked behind a wall, if it switches to first person or something so it was a bit more realistic and required......*gasp*........skill to use, I'd get a kick out of it.

Cover systems would be fun if the AI was actually smart enough to counter it. But no, most of the time once you're in cover, the AI is pretty much dead.

I was hoping that bc2 would start a trend with its destructible environment so that maybe cover shooters wouldnt be as dumb as they currently are
