How come you didn't get the UP in the first place? Razz

For the problem you're having, for many the unofficial patch didn't do squat tho; try changing the graphics from hw accelerated to software from the game settings. Or alternatively, Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Trouble shoot and lower Hardware acceleration.

It's a known bug.

1. Search for Infinity engine 8800 fix,
2. Use P:T Widescreen mod + GhostDog's PST UI mod v2.1 ( recommended)
3. Buy an older card ( GF 6600GT, anything pre-8 series )

Ati cards can use the 3d effects without issues.
Since you're unwilling to get the UP then there's not much anyone can do to help you, you will run into a lot of annoying bugs.

Yes, I had this problem too when i tried to play it again this year, everytime I or an ennemy casts a spell, the screen flickers, slow down and crash.

I tried all the fixes suggested to me on the internet, didn't work. Most of the time the fix was to lower completly your hardware acceleration, but my display driver doesn't allow me to change this setting.

sucks. :/

On 8800 GTS 512, 8800 fix fixed only items black box problems for me, spells animation would still froze the game. The only solution that worked was disabling DirectDraw Acceleration via dxdiag.exe, but that cause mouse cursor to leave trails that wouldn't disappear for a while. So, I ended playing it via VMWare + XP, there still were mouse cursor trails but they lasted only for a couple of seconds.

Last time I played Torment I used "Microsoft Virtual PC 2007" with Windows 98 SE installed on it. It works flawessly.

This will fix it:

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to give an update, I finally managed to get the game running with all the mods at normal speeds without any glitches by using the Application Compatibility toolkit method. Nothing else works with Ati cards, including the Nvidia fix.

Downloaded the program here (ApplicationCompatibilityToolkitSetup.exe): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=24da89e9-b581-47b0-b45e-492dd6da2971&displaylang=en#filelist

After installing the program, open "Compatibility Administrator" (should be under the new start menu shortcut "Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0")

I then pressed "New" and then right clicked on the newly created database and choose "Create New" and "Application Fix"

Name it whatever you want, and then locate the program file: "torment.exe" wherever it is on your HD. Click Next and choose one of the operating system compatibility modes if you wish; I chose "none." On the next page scroll down to "ForceDirectDrawEmulation" and check it. Click finish.

Now go up to "torment.exe" on the top right and right click to "Run Program"

More detailed procedure:
Hi all,

I managed to fix this problem for baldur's gate in vista by enabling software directdraw. Maybe it also works in XP and for other infinity engine games, I haven't tried. It'll only work for the 2d rendering engine (OpenGL mode won't work). After you've applied the fix, the game is very fast and without any artifacts. The fix is permanent. You don't need loader scripts or stuff like that.

Here's how to:
1. Download and install the microsoft application compatiblity toolkit:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=24DA89E9-B581-47B0-B45E-492DD6DA2971&displaylang=en
2. Start the 'Compatibility Administrator' with administrator rights.
3. Click the 'New' Button
4. Right click the new database. Select 'Create new application fix...'
5. Name your program and vendor however you like. Browse to your bgmain2.exe file. Click next
6. Select 'None' for operating system modes. Don't select additional compatibility modes. Click next
7. Tick the 'ForceDirectDrawEmulation' compatibility fix.
8. Click next and finish.
9. Save your database.
10. Right click the database and select install. This will install the database.
11. Close the compatibility administrator and start baldur's gate. It should work correctly in 32bit mode without any ingame rendering fixes. You don't need to run the compatibility administrator again.

Well, I tried the torrent.ini tweak listed here ( http://www.bootstrike.com/Torment/Online/torment_vista.html ):
Translucent Shadows=0
SoftSrcKeyBltFast=1
SoftBltFast=1
SoftSrcKeyBlt=1
SoftBlt=1
SoftMirrorBlt=1

and, well, all works fine, no more spell issues and happily playing fullscreen without fiddling with the HW acceleration.
Tested a little more and everything works great, this is the easiest fix I've found.

using this didn't help.but after
I tried to put BitsPerPixel=32 from this thread.
seems to fix the slowdowns,but in the price of no cutscenes at all... any way to "balance" it?
