Rahul Sood, founder of Voodoo PC (and now the representative of Hewlett-Packard) made a great note on his blog. Worth a read for every PC gamer.

Quote:
Microsoft Killed a Killer Project

I never thought I would be more disappointed in the industry then when Microsoft killed Ensemble Studios. ..however nothing surprises me anymore Smile

(...)

There was a project that got killed at Microsoft. This project was designed to allow console gamers and PC gamers to interact and battle over a connected environment.I've heard from reliable sources that during the development they brought together the best console gamers to play mediocre PC gamers at the same game... and guess what happened? They pitted console gamers with their "console" controller, against PC gamers with their keyboard and mouse.

The console players got destroyed every time. So much so that it would be embarrassing to the XBOX team in general had Microsoft launched this initiative.

(...)

..had they allowed something like this to take place then perhaps the desire to have the best platform would still be there. Perhaps the scale of the PC would have allowed Microsoft to get away from the hardware business and focus on their core, software.

They did go through with it in one instance; Shadowrun .. and MS gimped the ever living SHIT out of PC players' controls in order to "even the playing field" Dicks.

Right, the net code was so bad and controls so bad on PC, that the console players were better because they had aimbots, err sorry, aim assist. Laughing

Yup! If you played on the console, you had "aim assist" to compensate for the shitty analogue sticks .. but there was no such thing on the PC.

See!! Console gamers are every bit the equal!!! lulz!!! Rolling Eyes

Maybe they'll try it again, but this time with their kinnect controller.
I've seen some console players talking how it will be so much better than mouse+kb when playing FPS games ( Laughing ) and how it will alow to finally play RTS games in a console properly ().

Too much minority report I guess.

I can see it working (Somewhat) in games like Black & White or other lighter strategy games but say Supreme Commander or C&C 4 (Both which have console versions.) wouldn't work at all without a controller or how would one "select" units, "group" them, order them around set build ques or even basics like moving the camera or zooming. (Bend forwards towards the camera to zoom in then imaging picking up the tank and patting the factory to start production, slap the enemy soldiers to initiate attack and via microphone issue precise orders and via camera do proper military hand movements signals for advanced ordering? - flip the finger to send a automatic taunt?, hehe anyhow it would just be too complicated compared to a controller in any deeper strategy game or even lighter titles as well I'd guess, games like Fable 3 and others aside from pasic petting and child games or maybe training titles only use it for side stuff as well don't they?)

This would all be made a shitload easier if MS stop being the cunts that they are and actually allow their customers to use a friggin' keyboard and mouse if they so wish to.

"We don't want to market the 360 as a PC" Well seeing as how you included PC components, I'd say the damage has already been done.. you might as well let the gamers choose their own controls. If the derps want to keep using joypad, let them! Just give the other people the OPTION, eh?

If my memory doesn't fail completely, Colonies wasn't bastardised like Shadowrun was -- so yeah, PC gamers had full keyboard and mouse control with no artificial restrictions on precision and/or speed Very Happy

Little bit of an off topic, but did Lost Planet allowed you to inverse the Y-axis on the mouse? I remember that the demo didn't had that, and there were conflicting reports of the full version supporting it.

To be honest, it's not a bad game either. At least it had some interesting concepts, unlike StarCraft 2. It was a little bland, but nothing awful, like C&C4.

I think the only gameplay aspect I appreciated about UaW was the that the major battle weapons, like that monstrous walking strider, each had specific hardpoints you could target and destroy - like weapon emplacements or shield generators. It reminded me of Empire at War's space battles and added some strategy to the game.

The rest I just felt was sub-par consolised tat.

Oh and everything is better than C&C4 .... IMO Razz

LP: Colonies is the only good cross-platfrom game I can think of. It really was quite fun dominating those console players. You could really tell who was playing on pc and who was on console. Laughing

I remember someone talking about a dreamcast game that was cross platform that ended up with PCs always destroying the console.

That would be Quake 3 Arena, if my memory serves me correctly -- but don't forget, the Dreamcast NATIVELY supported keyboard and mouse on most their FPS titles; Q3A was no exception, nor was UT or SoF or the leaked copy of HL. (Shame the DC version of Q3A was limited to 4 players only Laughing)

I think he just says, that the dirty console playing peasants use inferior equipment and thus struggle against the better equipped glorious pc gaming master race.
