yay or nay? Canon EOS 5D Mark II?

im wanting it for primarily taking stills - anyone here have one? what are your thoughts? been looking around for reviews, and ive heard mostly good things about it - it tends to be the model i see popping up most often for great dslr cameras.

and yes i know its not cheap, but im serious enough about taking pictures that im aiming for relatively high end.

There probably isn't anything that camera can do that my Nikon D60 can't.

Also more megapixels aren't always better

he explains it there so you'll be saving quite a bit of money on that front. Read through his site and you'll find that paying 2K for a camera is only really for if it has specific features you require.

Again a Nikon D60, D80 or whatever their new range is or Canon's counterparts will be more than enough. Save the extra money you'd be saving for a fun array of lenses Smile One thing I would recommend is a camera with auto bracketing. My D60 doesn't have it but all the models above it do.

Also get ahold of esel gesi or sin for more information, those two are fantastic photographers.

Lol, don't listen to this guy.

Nikon D60 is a nice first-step DSLR, whereas the 5D Mark II is a professional camera with a lot better optics and sensors (check out the ISO-steps for instance). Nikon of course have similar cameras (so it's not about the brand, really the two brands are pretty similar).

Comparing the D60 and the Mark II is like comparing a Volvo with a Köenigsegg. Yes, both have four wheels, a motor, etc. - but the rest of the difference is significant (such as 5D Mark II being able to film video in 1080p for instance). ^^

Yes, yes I'm back.

It was an example and for being new he wouldn't miss it. You can still buy an 800 dollar camera and get all the nice lenses vs buying 2K camera with 1 lense

You don't seem to get it. The reason why an expensive camera like the Mark II is more expensive isn't the Megapixels. It's the quality of the digital fullsize sensor. The one on the Mark II is of a lot better quality than that of the D60 for example (which iirc is not full-format). The sensor is of paramount importance to image crispness, sharpness and quality. I can for example take an image at ISO6400 in average room lighting with a 50mm normal lens and get better sharpness and quality of the image that you get from one of the cheaper DSLR's at ISO 100 in broad daylight, and that with less chromatic abberration or any other problems that occur with those.

This is just a small tip of the iceberg of why a camera like that is better, it's not just the megapixels or the lenses that matter. I've tested a 50mm 1.4 normal lens on a 550D Canon and the Mark II and the difference in image quality is astounding.

Furthermore the build quality of the Mark II, including weather resistance makes cameras like the D60 or EOS550D seem flimsy and toylike. Trying to say that the D60 is on par with the Mark II is pure ignorance.

wasn't arguing nor saying the D60 was better by any means. I know what ya mean bud, I was trying to say spending 800 or so on a D60 or something vs a 2K body for someone who's new into the hobby, how much is he going to notice/miss the better features ya know?

Obviously you know your stuff so you'd notice the difference but how much is a new guy gunna notice?

None the less he'll be getting a good camera regardless.
