OK it was lightning but I wanted to use that title
Well on tuesday night (3am so I guess it was wednesday morning) I wake up to the sound of rain pouring (window open). 10 seconds later *BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM*, the loudest thing I've ever fucking heard. The electricity went out, I said fuck it and went to sleep. In the morning I changed 4 fuses, saw that the modem and router (~200€) were fucked up and the my computer screen as well. The computer somehow survived but it's semi-fucked up because as long as you have it connected to the mains it is sort of half on (the fan is going and lights are blinking) but when you press the power button it starts up normally and works perfectly. Weird. My digital tv-tuner also went kaput, but it was a 50€ POS anyways so w/e.
The lighting actually hit the phone line which went over a branch on this huge spruce on my backyard and cut the line so it had to be fixed. Luckily nothing started to burn.
and btw. this is the fucking SECOND TIME this happened (last time in MAY THIS YEAR). Last time was my own fault because I couldn't be arsed to pull out the plugs because hockey was on -> computer motherboard, modem and router went (the surge came through the phone line). But this time there was no sign of lightning when I went to sleep so what the f can you do? Should've got me some fucking surge protectors after the last time...
Guess this is a good excuse to get me some new stuff.
P.S. I'm using my 7 yr old 1024x768 LCD now and it's AWFUL. How could this ever have been any good? I constantly feel like technology hasn't really evolved much int the past few years, but holy shit!

Dude youre extremely lucky nothing caught fire, Ive seen lighting hit near a wooden pole and it simply caught fire due to the lightnings blast. Always check for fire when there is lightning this loud and this close.
Haha I love hearing those stories about lightning destroying hardware and equipment. The same happened to my aunt 3 weeks ago. 1 computer totally fucked.

Its not that we have surge protectors..no..the house is so fucking old, as soon as there is lightning in the "vicinity" (10km) the electricity goes off immediately.So if a storm comes I turn off the computer, light candles, get in the bathtub then read some books. When its over I go to the fuse box and turn it back on. Always works, nothing ever got destroyed
A surge protector is not designed to protect from lightning strikes. They are designed for issues on the rest of the power network. Not 30 thousand amps of power with what is basically ~ voltage. Lightning has so much potential that it will find it's way right through the surge protector. You ain't protected from shit if your house gets hit.

The power came through the phone lines apparently, and I suspect most of it dissipated through ground, but some spread to the grid in the house. Thus a surge protector would definitely give the hardware/power lines in the house a better chance of survival.

Its even been tested, it makes a huge difference.
It would be silly for the surge protector manufacturers to say that they'll pay for any damage caused by lightning or anything else if the surge protectors don't actually protect you from it. By the wy, surge protectors are seem like a good way to insure your electronics, if anything breaks you just say that it was caused by a surge and you should get payed

Lightning hit the local supermarket just under half a mile away from me a long time ago, I think it travelled through the phone lines because it took out my modem inside my PC.
