Wedbush Analyst Michael Pachter came out in full support on his GameTrailers.com Pach-Attack! show for Ubisoft's controversial digital right management (DRM) that is currently in use for PC games like Assassin's Creed II, Settlers 7, and Silent Hunter. The DRM requires gamers to be online at all times even during single-player portions of the game that typically wouldn't require owners to go online.
Responding to a question from a viewer who asked whether or not Ubisoft's DRM will result in reduced sales, Pachter declined to answer the question and instead voiced his support vehemently for publisher's taking any step necessary to battle piracy.
"Anything that a publisher does to make sure you don't rip off their game is their right and if you don't like it, great. Go find something else to do with your time," said Pachter. "So, do I think they made a mistake? I wish all games were like that. Because I think people who steal should be in jail. If you think that's right, good for you. We have no interest in your business since you don't pay for stuff anyway."
Ubisoft's DRM has not only been criticized but has actively been attacked leaving many players unable to connect to Ubisoft's authentication servers and thus, unable to player their games. Hackers have also actively been trying to break the DRM claiming to have done so at one point. Ubisoft denies the hack and says that their anti-piracy code has not been broken.
One thing that would have been good for Pachter to address is the DRM's effect on legitimate purchasers of games. As we've covered before, going after piracy is fine but a balance needs to be struck that doesn't put onerous restrictions on legal purchasers of games or require them to jump through hoops to play.
Pachter is a known idiot for many years. He often "predicts" stuff that turns out to be totally opposite. Who knows why GT keeps bringing him, instead of someone who at least gets most of the stuff right.
He's just one of those guys in the industry that are completely uneccessary and eat up uneccessary amount of money for no apparent reason (ie, more than a penny). Just a miserable old fuck who tries to be hip with the yougsters. Don't know if it's pathetic of creepy.

The protection was cracked, this guy seems totally clueless.
you ubishit thinks that Uplay is part of they game so thats why they say its not cracked
If it's cracked, when do I get to see a working Silent Hunet 5 crack so I can play that?
Where is the update to the Settlers 7 crack because it's so buggy right now that I'm almost considering buying the game? (Just kidding, that's not gonna happen.)
Also, why does my friend who played both the 360 retail version and the PC-cracked version tell me that it seems like the cracked version is missing a whole lot of enemy encounters? Is that crack really working or did they release a bad crack like they did with the first SH V release?
Uhmm why..let's see. Cracking this protection requires lot of time and/or effort, more than other protection. Big titles so far has been released, thus proving the protection is cracked. So why should they bother? If it was task that takes matter of minutes, I am sure they would release shitty SH5 also.

HAHAHAHAHAH read the previous logs for even more LULZ,
Why are they lauding the UBI DRM so much? It's not doing what it's supposed to, namely generating more sales. If anything it has the opposite effect as people get pissed and it's already cracked.
Maybe, just maybe Assassins Creed II benefited from it because the crackers needed time with the new code. In the meantime everybody who didn't have the patience to wait for a working crack went out and bought the game. Let me stress this isn't a fact it's merely me speculating. The next top release won't however benefit from it as they now know how to crack it.
Version 2.0 of the DRM will be much harder to crack though as they will stream key-elements from a master server online as you progress through the game. If they pull it off it might mean the end of pirating games as we know it.

Well not exactly, the server-side software isn't included, which is why for example the wow private servers will never work exactly like the official ones.
Actually, if I remember correctly, WoW was one of the easiest to make because it included everything in the game archives, so extracting and making the software was the easy part.
Yeah you can visit all the locations and such, but everything that is scripted (npc/mob behaviour, quest triggers, raid encounters) isn't included on the client-side files so all private servers need to emulate those. And consequently they all suck ass compared to the real deal
Private server:
Official server:
You can see that on the private server Ragnaros is just standing there waiting to get pummeled, whereas on the official server you get that lore bit and the grand entrance (not the best example but I just nabbed the first youtube videos I came across).
Private server is missing just about everything that makes the encounters varied and unique - speech lines, special attacks, different phases and so on. Instead practically all enemies - including the raid bosses - just hit you in melee. No need to say how fast the charm wears off of that.
There's a german private WoW server that run pretty decent by now. Of course there are bugs but most big encounters work (almost) the way they are supposed to.
I know some of the team and they're really dedicated.
But yeah, compared to the official servers private ones suck ass but some of them are trying.

Yeah that video is over 2 years old on a small server. Last time I tried it on a big private server most of the bosses were actually pretty well scripted, not 100% retail but scripted nonetheless.
