As this game goes on sale today, I would like to get help (if possible) on an issue that has been bugging me since day 1.
I can run the game fine, but sooner or later (usually 10 minutes) my framerate will drop to less than 10 (especially Outdoors), I usually can Alt-Tab out and into the game and then it runs well again, but only for a few minutes.
I have tried different drivers, tweaks, patches and most importantly, I have tried to play the game on the absolute minimum settings in lowest resolution and the issue is still there.
I even tried to uninstall some codecs since that did for some people.

I have a q6600 2.40 Ghz CPU, a GF8800GTS(G92) 512 Vram, 2Gb DDR2 Ram, Win XP Pro 32 bit and this I know, is more than enough to run the game fine.

This is actually pretty annoying, and ridiculous since the game was released more than a year ago, luckily, I didn't pay for the game, but now there is a Steam sale for the complete edition, I of course would like to own that, but NOT if I can't play the damn game...
Wonder if New Vegas is gonna have the same crappy bug, and why did they never fix this?

The game has a few memory leaks and I guess it's the Vram building up over those 512 MB and thus relying on the Windows cache instead slowing the game down.

There's also some CPU script issues that can slow things down and the game isn't very optimized for quad cores (Can even be very unstable on certain configurations, easy to check though since if you enter a interior area with no other characters in it the game will freeze/crash.)

Unsure if you use any mods or texture replacers but the game does have a rather bad caching system and using high-resolution replacers will quickly increase the strain on what the cache can handle though it's rare for the game to be unstable but stuttering will increase instead.

What drivers are you using as well since NVIDIA has had problems with this game in some recent 250 series revisions and that might be what's causing this instead of something from the actual game.

This mod to regularly clear the "cell" (Game areas.) buffers might also help but won't be a permanent solution.

(The patch-mod they've done is also quite good but it would have needed more work as it has a few bugs and only covers some of the issues in the game and DLC, of those that can be fixed this way that is.)

EDIT: Did a few searches, driver issue seems to be mainly stuttering on a certain 257.xx driver version fixed in a later 258.xx beta driver.

First of all, a big thank you for being so helpful Smile
I have this problem with or without mods, I have had the problem always since the game was released and tried several different drivers (currently running 197.45).

I don't know, I'm one of those "computer guys" that fixes pc's for friends and family and also building pc's and modifying hardware and generally have a well maintained system without a lot of bloatware running, so I am surprised that I never managed to fix this problem or find a solution Online.
I will try that mod you mentioned, but if that doesn't fix my problem, I guess I'll have to reinstall Windows, but that goes against my principles as it is only one game (but a good game) Smile

To look at it in another way the game will cache stuff to load them faster next time, however it's not very efficient at unloading said data and the mod linked to will run a console command every ten minutes (Or it might have been cells visited.) via a script called "PCB" which will clear this cache, however this isn't the entire cache the game uses though it does reduce video memory usage a bit.

I never got the game stable either for other reasons such as bad multi-cpu support, closest I had was by running the game windowed with VSync enabled and without AA but it could still crash periodically.
(Mostly empty smaller interiors which is a rather well known issue.)
