It was a joke yes but this hoax has been created (not by me) to show that the majority of people does not even understand what Dihydrogen Monoxide means.

I saw this long time ago in a "Stupid Americans" type of show or segment, where some interviewer goes around scaring people about "dihydrogen monoxide" and mocking them its water. To be honest, I wasn't sure myself what it was exactly back then. Laughing

When I read a chemical compound in written form, I instinctively try to resume it to it's letter base elements.

Some complexer compounds based on more exotic elements I might not figure out immediately, but Dihydrogen (H2) Monoxide (O) it's fairly obvious.

Anyone who knows that water is H2O should figure it out without much thought.
