After closing the Esemble Studios, we thought there would be an end to the Age of Empires series. Nothing is less true for Robot Entertainment is currently hard at Age of Empires Online. We are going to play online with and against friends. Also are all terms used for this game as a social experience and a world that continues to grow, even if you're offline. Unfortunately, the series seems to go on the casual side. Perhaps the game looks closer to Farmville than what we know from Age of Empires.

Check below the trailer for Age of Empires Online:

What I loved about Age of Empires was the serious historical background of the games. And now that's gone... Sad

Lol, closing Ensemble didn't kill the franchise. AoE3 killed the franchise.

Why does this look at some sick attempt to cash in on the MMO craze, plus with those graphics trying to cash in on the Warcraft craze? A historical based RTS using pastel graphics? Fuck off, how am I supposed to take this seriously?

I realise I'm raging here, I can't help it. AoE2 was brilliant. So many fond memories of online play, made so many close friends. I just feel like all that is getting shit on now.

Now, usually, I'm all for jumping to conclusions, as that works best, but take a look at what these people were able to pull off for a console strategy, they made it almost (ALMOST) enjoyable, and no console strategy ever came close to that for me.

Yes, it's no age2 - which is still the best strategy game of all time for me, but I'm willing to give it a chance, I', playing sc2 pretty hardcore now, I'd love to mix it up with some relaxing ageX.

AO3 didnt kill the franchise...

The game sold millions of copies .. it was hardly a failure (yes it wasn't the best game.. infact didn't come close to AOE2 . . but hardly a failure in terms of sales)

It was the publisher killing the franchise again....

Basically, it's like Caesar combined with aoe3, if you ask me. Persistent city building sim, and skirmishes. Look, it doesn't seem half bad to me, I will try the beta, and I might end up loving it. Age of series is the best thing that ever happened to the strategy genre, alongside the commandos series (except the shooter).

The alpha only recently ended and the closed beta just started. Not sure how long they're going to keep the beta closed though.

Alright, I did some analysis of the first trailer, and what I found was ... very promising, so listen up folks!

First off, I'm not easily impressed, and the graphics of the game is very disappointing, but misleading. This, if I see it right, is no kids game, so here are the clues.

During various gameplay cutscenes I noticed the following from the HUD.

Middle top: Roman number pointing out the current age, just like in age games of past, so that's a relief right there. Aside from that, you can clearly see the resource types: Food, wood, gold and stone! That's right, Age II style my brothers, Age II style. On the lower part of this top HUD element there's also four empty boxes, they will probably be clickables, four clickables, four ages probably, no coincidence, think age of mythology.

Top Right: the map, and on the map buildings denoting probably town centres (multiple villager making establishments, no matter what you call it). - This is not 100%, but it proves, that expanding and creating a large settlement is quite the important thing.

Bottom middle: The unit selection HUD, something very interesting is here - four boxes, as I see it a shield slot, a weapon slot, an armor and a headwear slot - varies on different units. Now, this means, there are branching tech trees for units, where these are researched (during the skirmish or from the capital city - I don't know, but the logical would be, that the initial research is done in the capital, whilst the effective research - as in the choice - is made during the skirmish). Overall, I like this idea very much, you can customize your army through and through.

These are just a few initial observations, and TBH, I am very hyped for this game now, and I rarely am like this. The main conclusion I drew, is that the advancement of your capital city (think aoe III home city, but interactive) is done by taking quests, and completing them through skirmishes, then making the important tech choices here. Also, crafting takes place here, etc. Whole lot of options, and coming from the original creaters, creative leaders of the whole age series, it is guaranteed to be deep. The conclusion is, you won't have any "actions per day", like with facebook games, you have as many points, as time you invest. That's a big yes yes!

The graphics are misleading (at least, my observations point towards this conclusion), this is not a facebook/derp game. It might actually be the best MMORTS being made.

No, I am not an employee of MS, it's just that, after my initial disgust, I decided to look for clues, and what I found, I like so far. I like it very much indeed!

A failure in the eyes of every fan of AoE2. The only reason it sold so well was due to the huge AoE2 fanbase. The fact that I can still find tons of people playing Aoe2 online versus how many people I hear playing AoE3 should point out how dissapointing that game was for the franchise.

Sure, it might not have failed for the people who got paid for the work, but I don't give to shits about them. They dropped the ball on what the fans wanted and suffered because of it.

What are you talking about? Who said anyting about...? Nevermind. Look, the whole reason AoE2 was so popular was in part due to it's artistic style. Considering the timeline those games were in, the artwork and design really fit the mood. Now it's just....cartoon chilidishness. It looks so out of place. That style might work for Zues, or settlers or any number of games that use that type of art, but Age of Empires had a very specific feel to it, that's being completely pissed on, imho.

Raging fanboyism aside, I'll still wait and see how this turns out. A game is still a game, and I've been known to eat my words before, so who knows maybe I'll be surprised. But god damn looking at this turns my stomach something fierce Sad

I played this for a few minutes yesterday on Gamescom. While a few minutes isn't nearly enough, the explained the game to me.

You have a city that expends, and where you build houses etc. From there you can access a worl map, and visit other cities. When you click on special people, they give you missions, which will reward you with items and/or ressources.

The missions I saw where on a different map each time, so not in your home city. But that might change later, who knows.
Some missions are played alone, some can be played co-op (maybe there is pvp as well, I dunno).

The game is free to play, you don't need to buy it either. What does cost money is items for your units. So a bit like Farmville in that case...
I don't know how much items will cost, but you could at least try the game without having to pay anything at all.

Beta signups are now open on the aoeonline homepage if anyone is interested btw.

Well, seems like my predictions from the trailer turn out to be true afterall.

I'm pretty much hyped about this, although I rather it was not based on the stinking silly f2p model, but as long as you can get the items from other sources than buying them, cool!

Also, this IS innovative, no matter how you look at it.
