I can't believe we don't seem to have a topic on this.
At some point this went free to play. I played it a bit a long time ago, and for some reason got the itch to turn it back on.

Their "free" version is some kind of streaming service. Man what a load of garbage. It's advertised as coming in pieces so that you can "jump right in!"
I've been trying to "jump right in" for 2 hours.
First it was a trickle of a download to get the base client, then a trickle of a download to load all the character parts to make a character (apparently can't continue on with my other one)
and now I've been sitting on submitting the character for like 25 minutes.
All in all, I've spent 2 hours "jumping right in"

In fact the character model wouldn't even properly show because it hadn't been cached, or load or who knows what, so I have no idea what the character will even look like once I get going here.

There are ways to run a F2P game, and ways not to do it..
Sony is all over the ways not to do it.

I played the game when it was released, it was okay but nothing special.

I tried it now when its free, and omg were the graphics super bad. I certainly dont remember them being so freaking bad as they were when I logged in (maybe half of them weren't streamed in yet lol?). And yeah I remember the streaming issues too.

I'm not the person to not play a game because of graphics, but for a game I barely felt like playing anyway they were enough to make me uninstall right away.

If you want free to play I'd suggest LOTRO rather than this.

yes in both of those, lotr housing is very nice, its instanced areas but very pretty furnishing is possible in both, music can play in lotro that you choose when entering home etc..

although in eq2 crafting lots of neat things for your home is prob more fun, but everything tends to look nicer in lotro to be honest..

From what I remember, EQ2 had an extremely robust housing system (much moreso than LOTRO) in terms of the sheer amount of objects available to stock homes with. My favorite being the Halloween "Scare Crow'. You'd set him somewhere in your home, and randomly a ghoulified skeleton would pop up from the bottom of your screen cackling. Scared the shit out of me every time since it was random Very Happy

But they literally had thousands of objects, from ponds and pools, to statues, to genies, and craploads of pets. Loved it.

Shame the game was such crap at launch and as such never caught on as well as EQ1. It was released a month prior to the cespool that is WoW, and technically speaking wiped the fucking floor with it in terms of graphics and gameplay. Still, no system at the time could run it maxxed, wasn't exactly optimized

I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

Is the free version totally different than the regular version? Mind you it's been 5 years since I played it, but didn't you start off on a boat or something in EQ2? I finally got in last night and I popped inside greater Feydark.

The game seems totally different than what I remember.
I did crank the graphics and everything to ultra max and it doesn't seem bad..but it seems way more WoW than what I remember.

There's more truth to this than you know. When they released that underground Splitpaw expansion, the repeatable one which rewarded you with a flaming boar's head when you won, I made it a habit to go down there and get one every day. Before long, I had like 30 of those fuckers lined up on my wall, FPS went from like 80 to 10 when I zoned in. Was cool as fuck though, wish I still had the screenshot.

Yea, they have definitely dumbed it WAY down, a process that, if I remember correctly, started two or so years after launch. It's great that they did away with the archetype system, but all the other changes were not for the better (aka massive xp boosts, piss easy chained mobs etc.) Basically a shadow of its former self. I'm not sure what everyone is moaning about graphics wise - it was fucking gorgeous back in the day. Granted, that was six years ago, so rose colored glasses and all, but still, I can't imagine the graphics are THAT bad.

The game looks great still in some aspects today, but, the optimization of the engine, and how it only supports 1 core is just atrocious.

The lore is good in some areas, but mostly just poorly written garbage.

The soundtrack is amazing.

PVP is just unbalanced and all over the place like EQ1

Some of the best PVE experiences ive had tho, EQ1/EQ2.

I only played it for a month and a half tho, I'm not really into MMOs anymore.

But have they also redesigned the areas and stuff as well?
Yes, I found an old review:

This is the EQ2 I remember... it seems that the system wasn't just changed, the entire game was changed.

They should have called it EQ3.

I've tried to back and play EQ2 several times.... It has like a Base feeling of EQ, then somewhere around Enchanted Lands i felt like it lost its shit. The most fun I can get out of the game is tradeskilling like mad, the community feels like it full of a bunch of Star Trek nerds who are concerned with nothing more than how much more awesome they are then you, and will also only group with the 5 people they like who are also more awesome then you to level up.

This may of just been a server thing, but each time I play and love it until I get past Enchanted Land and start to really need to start grouping for good fun, and I join and a guild and it's like hanging out at a DnD store, smelling nothing but Cheetos and Mountain Dew.

I'm only around level 13 or 14 on the new character, which is higher and much faster than the old character I had in EQ2. I hate leveling so fast. It makes the levels too trivial. In DND every single level, every single point is is meaningful. Video games have kind of made a mockery of that.

one huge thing I notice is the orcs near Faydark.. I remember in EQ1, they were scary. An Orc accidentally wandered over when you were a low level and you were toast. I can't say as that I've ever felt challenged. refill health and mana every 10% along a level? what is that..

if the pay version was like the pay version before, I'd probably pay for that..but not what it is now. I am impressed with how responsive the server is. Usually I lag like crap here in Korea on foreign servers. Perfect World EU is barely playable, but Everquest 2 seems to hold up okay. No weird popping or lag at all.
Even on a free gold weekend.

I still don't have the full client. It's over 12 GB. I have 11 GB to go. It's downloaded enough to let me make a character and jump into faydark.

This loading makes no sense. I have loaded greater faydark several times. I finally got a house and jumped in, set some stuff up then exited to greater faydark only to be hit a 45 MB download at ultra slow speed. I can't imagine why. The zone has been loaded several times.
I gotta leave this open all night or something so that it'll download the entire client.
It really kills it when you gotta stop playing for no reason for 15-20 minutes while it loads something it has no business loading.

This preload is taking forever. I left it open for 7 hours while I crashed and it downloaded 300 MB.

I can't see how sony would expect people to want to give them money with this level of service.

Sure there's hundreds of private shards.

I used to play on a shard called 'Imagine nation' (10 years ago or so). Was pretty cool. Almost OSI speed skilling, but no skill limits, so you could get all of the skills to 100 instead of just 7 or 9.

Ugh. Sony is really doing everything they can to endear me to this. They had a free gold weekend this past weekend. It warned me before I could choose a race, saying some were gold, but it failed to warn me before choosing a class. I had no idea the class I chose was a gold class.

So I've either got to give it up or purchase the class pack.
