...im thinking about buying an ipod...

ive been relying on my psp since it came out for my mp3 needs, but lets face it... its always been an unwieldy beast for mp3s, so im thinking ill just bite the bullet and get an...an.. sigh... an apple product...

unless theres a far superior portable mp3 player out there? im open to suggestions... please... are there any, or is the ipod really the best thats out there?

and if the ipod really is the best there is, is there anything i should know about them? are there fuck-annoying restrictions n junk i should be aware of? or is it as simple as my psp is (just bam the mp3s onto the thing and away we go)

was looking at the ipod touch 8gb (8gb is totally fine for me, i probably wouldnt even feel restricted on less) - seems to be different versions of the touch? i know fuck all about mp3 players and ipods... help me out here

ipod good yay or nay, is basically what im asking...

There's always going to be better AUDIO players than the iPod. The iAudio and iRiver stuff is absolutely unsurpassed (*dons Anti-Macfag flame shield* Yes, it's true. Get over it) but the reason I got my 8GB iPod Touch was not only to replace my, seriously ageing, Sammy YP-K3 .. but also for the gamezzzz! ^_^

There are multiple versions of the iPod Touch, all coming down to exactly what you want it for;

8GB. Standard iTouch. Capable of music, videos, games, etc etc.
16GB. Now phased out, same as above just larger storage capacity.
32GB/64GB. The true beastly iPod, same hardware as the iPhone 3GS; considerably more powerful processor and graphics chip .. main functionality based around gaming and massive movie storage.

If you only want music, nothing else, I recommend an iAudio player or an iRiver. Unsurpassed audio quality and massive storage space .. but comes at a price premium.

If you want multiple functionality, then an iPod Touch 8GB or 32GB would be the better option.

IMO!

The downside of Android-based media players, like the Archos PMP or the Phillips PMP, is the price. If you thought Apple was expensive, wait till you see the price on some of the decent-specced Archos players.

Yeah, if gaming is the target then only consideration is the 3rd generation, but prices are so high it's not worth it.
Also, seeing as how Android devices are also advancing in the gaming market (most have superior hardware), and WP7 is becoming the new macfag devices (but also have good hardware), you really ought to do yourself a favor and just wait two months at the most. Things should be clear by then, even if you just get a better ipod at lower price.

Piece of piss to pirate. Connect device to net, visit a single website, device is now hacked wide open and you just download and install games on-the-device or .IPA files from anywhere else.

+100

The 32/64GB Pods are PATHETICALLY expensive.. look to spend no less than £200++ I don't really rate Android at the moment (had the chance to spend a few weeks with a HTC Desire and it's too clunky and lacks the gaming catalogue, again at the moment, of the iPod) but it is getting a lot better.. and the hardware really is amazing.

If you're not desperate for an upgrade now Chiv, I'm with Leo; wait a few months. Apple are brining out their iPhone4-based iPods .. so that will not only drop the price of current generation devices, but the extra few months will also bring newer Android devices to the market - dropping price on current ones - and gives the 'Droid app scene a chance to grow.

For the record though; as much as I lament not having the 3rd-Gen hardware... I really do love my 8GB iTouch a lot more than I thought I was going to. iTunes is the fucking devil incarnate, an absolutely abysmal program, but the pod itself is amazing and more than capable of gaming and movies too.

isnt itunes just that pc based software shit? do you even have to use it? was just hoping that the thing could just be used like a normal storage device, that i can throw files onto?

Nah, you can't use the iTouch as a storage device .. but there are dozens of programs that bypass iTunes and let you put music/vids on the device, as well as other apps (including being able to SSH into the pod) for installing games. The downside to some of these other programs? They're even clunkier than iShit Sad

Wait what? I can play game on the Ipod Touch? Are you talking about true game (RPG's?) or the casual games?

True games, my man! The iTouch is a surprisingly capable game player ... which is why tons of developers, first party devs like Namco/Sony/Nintendo/Square-Enix, are all supporting it.

http://toucharcade.com

Some of the RPGs are absolutely INCREDIBLE. Lately I'm hooked on Square-Enix's "Chaos Rings" as well as a pair of classic 16bit-style RPGs called "Zenonia"

christ apple are even bigger fucks than i thought. you just flat out cant put shit on the ipod unless its through some shitty software? if you hook it up to ur usb port, it wont recognise it as a storage device? jeez thats terrible, i guess they dont want to make shit easy for the users eh.

i had no idea they were THAT big a jerks. lame.

edit: looks like its only the touch, as you said, that cant function in this way, but other ipods can?

JERKS. total utter JERKS.

The only time the iTouch is recognised as a "storage device" is when you have photos on there, in which case a 100MB partition can be seen/used as a storage device by Windows. Other than that? It's a case of "tough shit, sonny!"

No wonder everyone fucking hates Apple. Bunch of restrictive cock-knockers.

No, Jailbreaking only allows you root access and the ability to install/run unsigned code. It still doesn't change the fundamental operation of the iTouch device Sad You can FTP into the gadget though, use it as external storage that way.. but man, how clunky is that shit?

as much as i hate apple retarded fanboys , gotta say , i'm very happy with my 3rd gen ipod nano , have it for 3 years now and it's still working , earbuds are pretty much trashed but still work

3rd and 4th gen are pretty awesome , 5th gen as a useless camera and 6th gen doesnt have videoplayback (good for watchign movies during class) and is touch screen only , so no clickwheel.

yes , they are expensive and overpriced , but still a good product since battery life is good
wouldnt buy a computer or mobile phone from them tho ,and having an ipod touch is stupid since battery life isnt for playing games

I get 5hrs+ out of my battery while gaming, 30hrs just for music and it fully charges in just over an hour (from USB port too, no less) Considering that's about the same as the PSP, I'd say it was pretty good. Unless you're saying PSP is stupid for playing games because of the battery life? Razz

In the case of the iPod touch it's more then just PR. Apple doesn't brag about sound quality as much as iRiver or Cowon but the touch since the second generation is one of the best sounding DAPs on the market. These are some RMAA plots on head-fi that prove it to be very balanced (unlike iRiver who like to boost low frequencies or Sony who totally mess with the sound to make it sound better then reality) with no background noise to speak of, great stereo separation and little harmonic distortion. This and gapless playback made me buy a 64 GB one a year back and I'm very satisfied.

And no, I'm no macfag and I agree that 400€ for a DAP is a lot but since there was no competition back then (I can't listen to music without gapless playback) they had me by the balls.

sounds like your mp4 needs... I wouldn't drag along a large PSP just to listen to some music. The iPod touch is pretty nice and jailbreakable as we all know. But there are cheaper alternatives.

Don't understand why people still buy standalone mp3 players when you can't buy a single cellphone these days that doesn't have that ability built in. I don't own either (an mp3 player or a phone with music player) so I wouldn't know the difference. But I'm sure that in the minds of music fans there must be a HUGE difference to justify the purchase. I sure wouldn't, for the simple reason that it's one more gadget that you have to carry around in your pocket. That is, those of us not hip enough to carry a man-purse Razz or that eternal favourite, the fanny pack. Very Happy

OMG! You've convinced me! Need ... buy .... iPod .... now! Razz That was one hell of an argument! You're wasting your time. You should work for one of those lawyer companies or negotiate some peace in that middle east place that keeps coming up in the news. Razz

Okay, your eloquent post aside, I gather that it's a quality of playback issue. Good to know although it still doesn't mean that I would go to the hassle of carrying/charging yet another gadget. Quality is not that much of an issue for me when it comes to digital entertainment. Heck, I still watch Xvids. Smug
