So here's the story...

Yesterday my wife dropped off her Honda at a local repair shop that her family has used for years. She needed a tune-up, timing chain replaced, water pump replaced, oil change etc.. We picked up the car and drove it home stopping for gas on the way. This morning she left for work and immediately noticed the heater wasn't getting warm. a few minutes later the check engine light came on and immediately after she heard a metal on metal grinding noise and had to stop on the side of the freeway with black smoke billowing out of the engine. She had it towed back to the same shop so the guys could figure out what happened.

They're saying it must have been gunk built up on the cam shaft so it overheated.

My inclination is that they effed up the water pump and that's why it overheated. If it was the camshaft the heater would have been working fine before the break down.

Thoughts? Is this guy trying to dick us around?

easiest solution?
Get it to another shop and let them take a look at it?

Did she try to start the heater immediately? Dumb question yes but who knows with chix... it takes a while for the engine to produce enough heat for the heater to work.

There's no way for crap to build up under the camshaft, and if it did it probably wouldn't overheat, it probably would run like crap with rough idling and low power. Dunno what the guy is smoking. Ask him for pictures of the cam or go in person and see whats up. You know mechanics like to screw with women.

If it was the water pump it might have been a defective part.. water pump could have seized and overheated the engine. You can't really screw up putting a water pump in, it either goes in or it doesn't. Maybe they tightened the belt down too tight, but if they did that it would take a long time for the pump to fuck up. The engine might be fine, because if the pump seizes, and since you only have 1 serpentine belt AFAIK with Hondas, the whole engine will seize. So if you fix the seized part, hopefully the engine will be ok... but it might mean bent valves and other damage.

Yeah, gunk on the camshaft? Pure bullshit.

First off - what engine is it? If it's a sub-2L, it's either a D15, D16 or D17, and if it's a 2L, it's a K20.
But when you say THE camshaft and not ONE of the camshafts, im guessing it's a sub-2L D-series, since they're SOHC-engines.

I'm sure the fault is with the mechanics that did the tune-up, they must've done something wrong. Best bet is to talk to a shop with a GOOD reputation, especially a Honda mechanic.

A good tip is to sign up at Honda-tech.com and look for help.

I'll find out what specific engine it is.

She was on the road for ten minutes before the incident. Long enough that the heater would have been well warm by that point under normal conditions.

First off -

You should never need to replace a timing chain. Ever. (Unless it breaks, and the engine isn't even running)

Some Honda motor's have a timing *belt*, and that needs to be replaced along with the water pump at 100k miles. The chain? Never.

I can't say about anything else, but the minute you said that they replaced the chain a red flag went up.

If you meant belt - It sounds like they installed something wrong, and the camshaft shit itself because of this.

Yeah, meant the belt.

update: So the guy won't say what the cause was but has now volunteered to replace the engine on his dime.

So yeah, I'm guessing he decided it was their fault.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Only engine in a car I ever owned that was belt driven was my Honda.

I loved my Honda, and the engine - But making it belt driven was fucking nonsense. A component that important should not be belt driven.

As far as I know all current hondas have chains. Mine's still belt driven tho ('07 V6).
In the past the chains used to be noisier (not to mention more expensive), so belts kinda made sense.

Well, saying that the chain NEVER has to be changed is the idea, but they CAN break (resulting in much more problems than just a broken chain though Razz). But yeah, they aren't part of a standard tune-up/servicing.

And yes, since you have a 2002 CR-V, you have the timing-chain equipped K20A1 engine, the K20 being one of the best engines ever built Very Happy

Speaking of the K20, I used to own a Integra DC2 Type-R, with the K20A2 (from the EP3 Civic) swapped into it. Cams, intake, ECU/tune, header/exhaust etc, made 250 hp and revved to just over 9,000 RPMs Smile Had alot of chassis and handling upgrades aswell, sooo fucking fun to drive on tight roads.

You do sometimes have to replace a chain. After 200K+ miles they can start to stretch. You also sometimes need to replace the tensioners sometimes, depending on the design.
