RELOADED release:

Patrician IV: Conquest by Trade (c) Kalypso

09/2010 :..... RELEASE.DATE .. PROTECTION .......: Serial
1 :.......... DISC(S) .. GAME.TYPE ........: Strategy

The Steam Special Edition contains alternate textures for the Counting House
and Cog ship type.

Patrician IV is the sequel to the historical trading simulation and strategy
series. You are a merchant in northern Europe in the late Middle Ages when
the Hanseatic League was flourishing. Your goal is to rise to the most
successful and influential member of the Hanse, ultimately being elected
Elderman, leader of the trading league. You start bargaining with common
goods, build up your own production and establish a merchant fleet. Later on,
you will gain more and more political influence and even found new towns.

However, a Hanse merchant's life can also have its dark sides. On your way to
power you have to hold your ground against fierce rivals, whom you have to
fight with economic competition, price wars or impure means such as sabotage.
Will you even engage in piracy?

Features
* Become a powerful merchant - rise through the ranks using your increasing
fame and wealth to shape towns from small villages to glorious capitals
under your control
* A complete strategic simulation - balance competing interests, trade
routes, political turmoil, disease, weather, piracy and greedy royalty
* Build an empire - construct buildings and hire workers, stimulating
demand for common and exotic goods
* Battle on the high seas - protect your ships from pirate raiders in
realistic and exciting sea battles
* Visually stunning - a powerful new graphics engine lets you visit
bustling and realistically recreated medieval cities such as London,
Novgorod, Cologne and Bergen
* Friendly Interface and Gameplay - Players will enjoy a brand-new, user
friendly interface that makes Patrician IV easy to play but challenging
to master

Anyone have high hopes for this? I found the previous patricians sortof unapproachable, though I've played pretty much every paradoxesque strategy game - wondering if this is more user-friendly and less micromanagement.

Been having fun so far. Doesn't seem to be noticeably different from P3; some improvements, some missing features. Can't remember if P3 ever had this, but this one has auto-trade, meaning captains can be told to just buy/sell whatever they think makes a good profit. Seems to be working well enough. There's a lot of text replacement bugs though, at least in the version I have.

Autotrade!!! THAT IS FUCKING AWESOME. I got the trade concept in the previous games, but got really pissed that 90 percent of the game was clicking through trades when what I wanted to be doing was macromanaging an empire. AI trading is good.

And I was assuming there'd be 10 gamebreaking bugs through and I'd have to wait 3 months for a patch to play, but if it's just text replacement that's good. Haven't played a decent strat game in a year that wasn't full of blundering AI catastrophes.

Is there a way to block the game through hosts file instead of a firewall? I don't use one.

Patrician 3 had auto trade as well, difference was that you had to manually assign cargo, while in Patrician 4 you can just select the towns and AI does the rest, this kills the game abit for me.
While setting up the routes in Pat3 was MAJOR PITA it was part of what made the rest of the game fun.
Also i dont like the new rank up system, while the last game was about reputation in your home town and wealth, this one is about how many ships you have and reputation in other towns.
I was never really intrested in building a whole trade eco system, but more the diplomatic side of it and hometown growth.
So in my personal opinion this is abit blegh, and i think most that played Pat3 would agree with me.

KGen: possibly i havent checked, but you can block it with windows firewall so its no big deal.

You need to block outgoing instead of incoming if you use the Windows firewall, played a bit of the German version (With English text.) and it's a interesting game though it will be a bit boring at first before you gain enough ranks to really make a difference, donations can help quite a bit if you have the money for it.
(Then doing it all over again to gain influence and ranks in other city districts, haha.)

You'd need the site name the game wants to connect to. No idea what that could be.

Anyway, looks like the auto-trade thingy sort of makes the game just like X3; get some universal traders then sit back and watch. The rest of the game is also similar to X3 in that it all just ends up being a means to get more cash. The Patrician series does the trading-simulation part incredibly well, unfortunately it just doesn't have much else to offer.

I installed game successfully, even reinstalled directx from the disc, still when I`m launching the game, the video signal somehow goes down, (I mean monitor is trying to find signal) and nothing happens. I can hear the intro and sounds but no video. I tried reinstalling ATI catalyst or directx from the disc.. Nothing.. I`m using win7 Ultimate x64, directx from disc and catalyst v10.8 and have all dot.net versions.. Does anyone have the same?

when I tried it a few days ago it crashed when I tried to increase the resolution from the 1680x1050 or something default.
I'm also on catalyst 10.8 so maybe it just has some problems with that driver version or ati cards in general, who knows. too lazy to try anything atm.

it scares me how expensive it is on steam btw... it's like 50 euros on steam for the digital copy.
now, the physical copy you can buy on german amazon for 38 euros, while the collectors edition costs 49 euros. and on UK amazon you get the normal physical copy for merely 24.99 GBP which is like 30 euros.

seriously steam..wtf?!

Yeah, same here, when trying to increase the resolution from the default one the screen goes blank. 10.8 drivers too.

I couldn`t even see the main screen, it went black before the intro was shown. Still, sound was playing normally. I read that we need to install the directx from the disc but its not working anyway.

Thought about that already, installed the dx from the Iso and still had the same problem. Anyway I've looked at the official forums and there are plenty of complains about the game, anything from it being too easy to boring...so I'll just skip it.

I'd like to try this, but I can't be assed to enable Windows Firewall (or any firewall for that matter). Does the hosts file entry posted above -
launcher01.kalypsomedia.com - work for fooling it?

Yep, really hard, but fun too. Played about 7 hours now in 2 days, forgot to eat even, as my Mediterranean trade route finally started to work.

Might not be the best one to help, as I haven't played any of these or similar games.. Smile But Just figured it out my self. To pick up goods you need to set wanted goods on the bottom, as trade certain amounts. You see the icon next to the good amounts to buy/sell, if you click on it it changes from city to warehouse.

Well the hole trade-route and warehouse buy/sell system is overly complicated, I've yet to get my trader ships to over 30% capacity. That's after countless tweaks on my 2 traderoutes, other route was 2% capacity at first.. edit: ah now with last tweak 84 and 71% capacity Smile

Got to try and make a third route in which I'll just hit all stuff to automatic buy and see what happens. Although I also hate the minimum/maximum prices needed to set. Is there really no simpler what that to go through all the cities on the trade route and write all the prices up on some paper and then hit them to the captain. Couldn't have bothered to do that though, went with memory on the most common goods prices.

Autosave at least works, had couple crashes where own save would have been far back. Oh and sea battles were kinda fun, but also take forever. If you need a game to kill some ( a lot) of time, then this is it Very Happy Now to make couple million and to buy the whole town! Bough a brewery, as I though I'd get them all for 400k, but no, just one house :'( 3 more left for competitors.

I'm going to say those dreadful words you don't want to hear. Keep in mind I'm a long-time ATI fan so I've been down this road before (the Anno 1404 release comes to mind): try an earlier driver set. I know it sucks but let me be honest when I say, I always have issues on my secondary PC (which has an HD4870) with new games and/or drivers. It's just a fact: I've had to rollback at least 3 times since I've gotten the card.

P.S. Yes, even the driver the game comes with can be bugged on certain cards.

It looks like it's adding some nice features like sabotage, marriage etc: http://bit.ly/cz8iJn

Think it's 1.0, haven't at least seen those. Just got o Mayor oh the start city and might be almost done with the game. Gets to a boring grind after 12h or so gameplay. But was fun while it lated Smile
