PC Gamer interview with staff from Valve
This time they talk to the guys who made Alien Swarm. One of the questions was:
PC Gamer: Why is it free?

Jonathan Sutton: This is an experiment for Valve to see what would happen if we released a free game, with all of the tools and the SDK, and we could see what results came out of it, how quickly people start using the tools and building things with it. Historically Valve have had great success with mods, from Counterstrike to TF, so this was really something they wanted to encourage, so that’s why we did it for free.

Wait, a developer wanting to see how well their customers would start using the tools and SDK that came with their game? What the ...... I'm simply speechless.

I have to keep asking Activision and EA, "Why can Valve do it and you can't"?

Because stockholders would disapprove. How are you going to explain to them why you are wasting man hours in releasing something for free?

Bullshit. It's done so people will install steam.

Once you have it installed it becomes so convenient you start buying games from 'em more and more.

They're a company in it for profit, call me cynical but I disbeleive any altruistic motives.

Ye and? Whats wrong with steam, except € <-> $ ?

There are always a lot of very cheap games which u can buy, so why not? or u prefer buying them for a full (overpriced) price?

LOL, it's obvious they're after profit, who the hell works for free? Razz
That goes without saying.

I mean even the TF2 movies aren't there to entertain you, they're promotional pieces to make you buy TF2.

Their upcoming 150-page L4D comic too.
They release free DLC because their sales skyrocket up to 3000% http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/57308

The thing is, their way of making profit (controversial L4D2 aside), benefits the community, which in turn will make them more profit, etc.

The mod team had announced they were turning it into a commercial product so nobody expected it to be free.

Or valve is hoping to find the counterstrike.

They figure if they give it away to everyone and someone creates something amazing, they'll snatch it up, commercialize it, hire them on, etc.

And the obvious conspiracy theory here is that the mod team was asked to say that by Valve, so that Valve could then release it for free "as a favor" and get the credit for being oh-so-good.

Considering they announced they were making a commercial version 5 years ago, in 2005, it's hard to believe in such a conspiracy theory.

Offcourse Valve is in it for the money, but that doesn't change the fact that they are helping the pc gaming community in a huge way with their business policy. Steam began as a total shitstain and evolved into a damn handy application. That and the way Valve is handling their major titles really got me liking them alot. I know that it's all for the money, but if it adds something positive too my life then i hope they make alot of it.

I love steam and think it's fantastic. Wasn't what I was saying.

Just saying it's not done just so people will "like their company". They just used PR to make it come across that way and people fall for it waaaaay too easy Wink

Other than the L4D/L4D2, Valve has done very little to tarnish their image over the years IMO. They release quality games, they often have great sale prices, they provide plenty of free content, even release a free game. Although I hate "having my eggs in one basket" so to speak, with a large number of Steam games, I have bought a ton of stuff off of Steam. I am a big fan if Indie devs and really have enjoyed a number of games I've bought recently, including Nation Red and Altitude. Some may hate Steam, but I think it's been a blessing to the PC community. It's a good platform if you don't have problems that provides a lot of nice features. With the inclusion of Steamworks, we see more and more devs add in things like leaderboards, achievements and Steam Cloud. Alien Swarm is solid, but the potential is there for some mods that blow the original away. I'd love to see them have a contest to see who can develop the best campaign and maybe recruit new talent that way. A lot of great developers have gotten started by making awesome mods. The best thing of all is that Valve supports SDK's and mod tools, which means they care about PC gaming. That can't be said about many companies.

Neither of them are very impressive as far as villains go imo, Jon Irenicus or Psycho Mantis should have won it.

that's pretty much correct , they should have added G-Man as a Villain since he's surely up to no good
but still
General RAAM - herp derp he's GEAR OF HALO BIG BAWSS
Breen - smart leader who betrayed his own race to get the top , fights with his mind instead of guns

Breen's nice cause he's morally repugnant and all that. But he doesn't even have a gun. What kind of end boss doesn't have a gun, even bioshock made Andrew Ryan pointless. Nah every video game is from the 90s and has to have a multi-staged massive boss fight, crysis, bioshock, sc2. Yay for playing it safe ;(.

best villain is that last mine in minesweeper. i swear, nothing gives you a greater sense of achievement than locking that illusive fucker down.

plus, you gotta love the gameplay... cant tackle the boss mine from the start, no, you have to go through his soldiers, working your way up through the ranks, weakening his defenses until youve finally battered his forces down and can take on the boss for the final ultimate confrontation... and fuck... when youve finally disabled him... man.. the relief... how physically, mentally and emotionally drained you are... fuckin games these days just dont compare.

plus hes a seriously intriguing character... never says a thing, never gives you any insight... his motives are an utter mystery... its seriously fucking chilling stuff...

it was half a joke, but i kid you not... i actually really started getting back into minesweeper about 2 months ago... just kicking on some music and doing the expert game... what can i say, i love it.

but at the same time... gotta admit... that last mine DOES make an excellent villain. just think about it... since his birth, how many gamers lives do you think hes been responsible for? hes killed me about 15 times today alone... hes a cold cold sadistic evil bastard.
