Quote:
Digital distribution platform Steam has surpassed 30 million user accounts, according to Valve.

Additionally, the company says the service is on track to record the biggest 12 months in its six year history.

In the past 12 months the platform has seen year-over-year new user growth of 178 per cent, while sales increased by more than 200 per cent.

The service, which launched for Mac on May 12 this year, now offers over 1,200 games.

Valve also said that peak simultaneous player numbers are up to over three million, with more than six million unique gamers accessing Steam each day.

"Steam is on track to record the biggest year in its six year history," said Valve president Gabe Newell.

About ten of those are mine.

Scary how much power Valve is getting with this though.

Soon they will be the "Walmart" of Digital Distribution. I do hope that it won't turn them into complete Asshats like Activision and Microsoft.

"PC gaming is dead blah blah Onlive is the future blah blah" etc.

If you think the above is true, you're an idiot. Like, a proper idiot - as in utterly bereft of common sense, logic and reason. Or you work for Onlive. Or both.

Of course they're getting power when day by day more and more games require it. First off you got Valve's own library which is pretty fantastic in itself but lately many big titles have turned into Steam exclusive games.

With some of them I even feel like it's Valve who should pay the publisher for using Steam because their main goal is to get their program installed into as many computers as possible. It's the first and hardest step in turning people into regular customers and what else would be better than having some guaranteed hit to use it?

For example I think Modern Warfare 2 or now Black Ops is very good catch for them. Say what you will but they're popular online games meaning people who didn't have Steam before are now forced to start using it. Another and latest example would be Civilization V which probably made high-ups in Valve office high five each other.

No, Valve specifically mentions that all 30M of them are active, they don't count the rest.

edit To clarify I'm not saying all of them are buying games, only that they're active. Banned accounts, or accounts that haven't been accessed in a long time, etc are not counted.

But it's trendy to make things up, pull statistics out of your ass and not even read about the topic!

I'm not surprised Valve has 30 million active users -- it's a reasonably good platform (convenient, frequent sales, decent social tools, great stat tracking), and of course a lot of recent titles require it to install. As DRM goes it isn't THAT bad, just annoying if you don't want to install it.

they nowhere said those are active, they said they passed 30 mln mark on created accounts, there is no such thing as inactive account on steam , sure they might not count banned accounts, i personally have 2 accounts, one with 0 games, second with couple, both not costing more than 10 bucks in total.. they are in those 30 mln.. but you cant call me paying customer..

trying to prove shit you got no clue about is trendy too isnt it? how about you get some actual stats before you come trolling

Found this: According to Valve an active account is an account that has logged in the last 30 days and owns at least one game: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=13289641&postcount=57

I'd link you the relevant "actual stats" but someone has already done that.

I can't tell if you're trolling or just very stupid.
