quick question... do i even need it when i have ffdshow? im just in this habit of 'having it' because ive always had it, but given that ffdshow handles everything AND does dts-ma when ac3 filter doesnt, i dont know if theres any reason to have it.

Not really, ffdshow's audio codec (libavcodec and lib****) are quite mature now.
Also, ffdshow's conditional presets means you don't have to tinker with matrices when you only want stereo to be converted into surround.

I use MPC HC.
Can't stand VLC, it always seems so sluggish.

hehe, yes, i remember the nightmare that was windows codecs way back then
had to do a number of reinstalls due to shitty codecs
luckily ffdshow came along and fixed that all
these days ffdshow handles pretty much every codec you care to throw at it and it is properly solid code
i've tried to use vlc several times and it's always been lacking in features and painfully buggy

k-lite and cccp and other codec packs these days are mostly just ffdshow + a few splitters and other additional stuff that has little to do with actual codecs
few people need more than the minimal install
though haali splitter is good for high bitrate files if you have buffer underruns

i use mpc hc and zoom player. no love for zoom player?
ONE LAST QUESTION
these days, does anyone need anything OTHER than ffdshow? i mean do i really still need xvid (and if youre gonna say 'who the fuck uses that shit anymore, you can take that shit outside, thanks ) - and for x264, is it the best choice as well?

Atleast once a week I use divx..old movies you cant get a hold of in anything else...but I've alwayws had an aversion to installing codecs and codec packs

ffdshow plays xvid and h264 just fine
it even has a multithreaded h264 decoder
but if you're on a slow-as-hell laptop, you can use coreavc for h264 playback
it's really fast, but it's a commercial codec
i haven't used it in years so i don't know if the quality of it is still as blurry
also, most videocards today can decode h264, but again the quality varies
and you always lose the chance to do any post processing on it, which ffdshow is good for
i like to put a few % of noise on all non-hd video so it won't look so blurry

CoreAVC is fine these days, none of the crap that plagued it in the beginning.
