No, it would not mean that it has to be a First Person game. A first person perspective is not a trademark of the Dead Island experience. Infact, I believe it has no trademark elements. But if you would be to skip some of the older games, and only focus on the recent abominations, the trademarks would consist of elements of survival, randomized weaponry, and semi-unique combat and damage system. All of which ARE NOT RESTRICTED TO FIRST PERSON GAMES.
