I played many RTS games since Dune 2 (back then) and with the years i slowly lost interest. C&C was way too fast-food with buildings and units exploding like popcorn after 1-2 hits . Warcraft 3 was a click-feast for keyboard-acrobats, if you just wanted to *play*, there was nearly no way to micromanage a fight. I dont want to learn keyboard shortcuts fpr months to have fun with a game.
Developers seem to concentrate on rts games where a match lasts 10-20 minutes (compatible for online play) instead of the more classical games like starcraft that could last hours. Since for many people this may be the holy grale, i myself dont get along with those games.
Now armies of exigo surprised me - it has beautiful graphics, TONS of units with special abilities (several cool ones that remind me of starcraft) and a campaign thats hard but very interesting and challenging. Actually normally i go straight to skirmish with rts games, here i am stuck with the campaign since days - and it comes with 36 Missions !!!
It also has 3 different races (not just different buildings) and each race has 12 campaign missions.
The fights are way better controllable than warcraft imho. You actually have time to cast resurrection or buffs IN FIGHT before your armiy goes down. Every unit has a meaning, so its nearly impossible to kill large land creatures withhout pikemen. And units gain experience which grants them an aura so all units benefit from it. Also it has items to find and use like warcraft.
It also doesnt suffer from the unit limit that warcraft has, like in skirmish games against the AI in warcraft once you beat the hero, because of the unit limit you could walk right into the AIs base. Everything relied on the hero. In AOE you can make every unit heroic, given the time.
So, you may complain its a warcraft clone, which is wrong. This game serves old-school players and has all what warcraft lacks. In other words, Warcraft is CS and AOE is Splinter Cell. Both games good, but i prefer the depth of AOE.
Just give this sleeper a try.
PS: The multiplayer comes with the full set of features (still not really standard these days) including Skirmish mode, good enemy AI (has really neat tricks up his sleeve) AI players in skirmish and multiplayer.

Armies of Exigo, i played this game twice, MP and SP, in both cases i was bored. The game is decent, but it seems that they did not put enough effort in it, yes graphics are nice, yeah nice CGI movies, voices are good, but the game doesn't give you a GG feel like BFME does. The game has no flavour whatsoever, i feel like the world and that everything is lifeless, the game doesn't intrigue me, it does have some good stuff like the unit leveling, but BFME has that as well, in BFME you can customize the units to your liking as well and some have their own special skills. BFME has flavour, it's world, it's setting, so does WC3, these games have their setting and originality, AOE is like,,,, i don't know how to say.... but it's like a cactus craving for water. Do you understand? AOE brings nothing new the genre as well, it simply doesn't have that gripping factor that intrigues me.
Btw you should try BFME, it's good, it's not a fast rush game also, i mean, the start online is very slow, well balanced and all, and if you play your cards right a match can go on for over an hour. My 2 cents.

BFME is not my cup of tea. Its like the whole graphics leaped forward but from the controls we are back in C&C 1 times. On the other side the campaign of BFME bored me strangely (different tastes i guess).
C&C games always had their charme for players. The simplicity lets you just play on for a while while in AOE you have to learn alot (unit combinations and special ability combinations). There was always a group who hated starcraft and loved C&C or loved doom and hated halflife.
For my taste AOE has MUCH flavour since it has all from warcraft and it actually works better in my opinion. The impressive amount of units and special abilities allows way more tactics than the few differences in BFME.
You cant say BFME has anything to do with starcraft...so i liked starcraft and so i do love this game.

Grues0me, I am stuck in the campaign where you must defend the city for 30 minutes.
How the hell do you do that?
You should use the catapult they say, but you can not rotate it, so it shoots so slow, that all the enemys walk just in the city.
Can you explain to me how you do that?
thnx
