Friend and I were talking about steam and how I don't like the idea you don't actually "own" your games but I see it as a lesser of evils considering they're doing more for PC gaming than anyone else.
This brought up the origin of steam, back when it first came out and what a piece of shit it was lol..

Anyone remember the dreadful experience? Amazing it's come so far.

Apart from the epicly long downloading times and the ridiculously unstable servers, I didn't experience any issue with HL2/CSS

I like Steam but the biggest issue for me is that you can't sell your games. I hope that Valve changes it's mind and sometimes in the future you can sell games you don't need.

I agree Sabin.. I had ALOT of prejudice about steam when it first got released..and since I was forced to try it, those prejudges got turned into discrimination.. Didn't use it for the longest time and yelled, screamed, and stabbed anyone who suggested I get it again. Can't remember why but some steam crack required me to have it not too long ago, and I don't mind it so much now. I may even begrudgingly suggest it.

Ugh, hated steam since the very beginning. It's far better now, but I'm still completely against the idea of it from the corporate side; a company like Valve having so much power over so many customers. And somehow messing around with your account or a pirated game can make you lose *all* your games by being banned? That's just ridiculous, and just the way publishers would want it.
Lots of good stuff too of course, but I could never bring myself to actually having many games there.

Never going to happen. Selling of pre-owned games is just like piracy to publishers and devs.

I hated it back when i bought HL2, i didnt had an internet connection at my own place and actually had to drag my pc to a friend to download and make it ready for offline mode >.<
Back then i really wanted it dead, now its quite ok tbh. Could be worse

Never going to happen. Selling of pre-owned games is just like piracy to publishers and devs. |
but thats the thing... far as valve is concerned, its a MASSIVE fucking golden opportunity... to allow gamers to sell games BACK to valve... its not like those games get onsold cheaper - which is what publishers are REALLY concerned about...
valve allowing a trade-in for credits system would be a fucking genius move by them.. it'd encourage more steam purchases.. and lets face it, the 'credits' theyd get for selling the game back to valve would be less than the discounts that are usually put on steam games after a few months anyway...
and hey.. if people really wanted to buy a full priced game, then sell it back for $5-10 worth of credits 3 days later... shit... if video/game rental stores were making 30ish bucks off a 3-day hire, id call that a pretty sweet business model!
BUT NO... valve made this platform with massive potential, but they just dont fucking know how to make the most out of it.

Damn chiv I never thought of that. If Steam did a buyback policy similar to the retail stores in the area..they'd roll that shit in just giving out credit.

I find Steam a bit of a mixed blessing, like you said Spyke, it's doing more for PC gaming then anything else at the moment, but on the other hand games that inevitably end up on Steam require Steam in order to play them online.
You cannot play MW2 online without being connected to Steam. Which isn't so good when the Steam servers go down (which they do regularly for maintainance or updating the steam platform/ advertising updates etc..).
Also by Steam taking control of your games they also in the process killed off the modding scene in the games such as CS, Halflife etc in the past. L4D as a prime example of wasted modding potential.
Being able to sell your games back to Steam would be great as resell value on PC games is crap anyway due to them being tied to a serial key. I doubt that would ever happen anytime soon though seeing as they already overcharge on some games that can be bought cheaper in a shop!.

Yes I am, I was just surprised at that price. And I couldn't care less about whether Valve allows the games to be sold back, I pirate everything anyway.

Why are you surprised by a price when you pirate everything? In pirating everything you're quite obviously out of the loop of prices and more in tuned with when you can get the product for free. A.K.A.:

Oh yes, it was a fucking pile of shit. Its beta was a real proper beta as well, bloody crashing and disconnecting non-stop
Nowadays though it's pretty awesome. There are very few media that allow me to use my 120 Mb connection properly, Steam does better than a lot of other crap. I generally get around 7-9 megs, which is not bad. Still only half of my connection, but not bad at all.
And as far as pricing goes, I'd rather turn my hate towards the US being fucked up in general than Valve directly. Europe gets fucked over with everything lately, not just on Steam. Hardware is 50% cheaper over there as well (not even taking the fucked up rebates into account). Even a software package from AGFA is substantially cheaper in the US than it is in Europe (as I found out at work the other day). Agfa is a Belgian company for crying out loud. BELGIUM OF ALL PLACES

Steam's good enough, but I've only been using it for a year or so. Good price cuts at times and speed has always been very good here. I'd never buy a full priced game via Steam though, I'd rather buy the boxed version.

5 years? Try 7, and that's for the public version. The beta started like 18 months earlier
