This is the ultimate USB gadget: the Self Destruction Button (available soon via GeekStuff4U.com). It's possible to use this device to block the use of certain applications, but we should have more info soon.

Talk about hardcore stuff for the paranoid ones!

"USB Self Destruct button".

L.M.A.O.

How precisely does this "self-destruct"?
Does it burn your hard drive? no. Does it kill your memory? no. Does t do anything useful? No.

What would really be a great idea (but likely illegal, except in Sweden.. everything's legal there) is a system like this attatched to several sticks of C4 or another h.e. that blew when you pressed the button, plus a wireless remote.

1 for the CPU
4 (large) for the hard drives
4 for your memory sticks
1 for your video card's CPU
8 for VC's RAM

*knock knock*
Agent: Sir, we're here on behalf of Operation Buccaneer... we need you to step out of the house.
You: 1 sec...
BOOM!

wouldn't help you much, buddy.

Even if your "bad" HDD was destroyed, they still have:

- The swap file on your good hard drive (thanks, Bill!)
- The contents of your memory (if your PC's on wheb they get to it, the memory is intact, thus retrievable
- The contents of your CPU's cache (same thing)
- The contents of your video card's memory (very possible they'd be able to re-assemble a screenshot of your desktop, and probably start menu from this. Those 2 would make you screwed enough)
- Any media you have lying around

Even if you have no CD's or DVD's that they can recover, a "Photoshop CS" icon on your desktop and in your start menu, a few bits of Photoshop's cache from your memory (~10mb will suffice), and a few kb's of photoshop's encryption keys from your CPU cache (like those that contain the name you registered PS under), especially if coupled with an image sent from your IP that's watermarked with your username, that's enough to pin $650 worth of pirate software on you.

Pure IP records don't do so well, especially if there's no hardware to back it up. So let's say that they have traced $8,000 worth of pirate stuff back to your PC, and the moment they come in ALL of the data on your PC's becomes unreadable, they've got nothing but the discs. And if you keep no discs, but store everything on your hard drive, they've got nothing but the IP records, and those won't stand in court for shit (they HAVE to prove your PC wasn't hacked, and how the hell would they do that if all of the data they need is gone). Thus, 2 weeks of infuriated cops, and the case is dropped on lack of evidence, regardless of what you were doing.

That's why I put up my first post. a single explosive pad (no more than an ounce) would easily wipe out one or more parts of your PC, you only have to insulate it well enough, and place a fe in your PC. then:

- Hard drives : BOOM
- Memory: BOOM
- CPU: BOOM
- Video Card: BOOM

High Explosives: 1. Baffled cops: 0.

NOTE: Don't try this at home. If you do, you're an idiot and I can't be held responsible if you get injured/destroy your PC because of the mailman.
