Apple is rumoured to include a new technology with the new batch of Macbook Pros in early 2011. It's called Light Peak, which will replace the electrically wired versions of USB and HDMI connections. Light Peak is a fiber optic cable, capable of increasing the transmission speed tenfold to 100Gb/s. The transmission protocol will stay exactly the same, which should entice more manufacturers to adopt the technology. Furthermore, USB and HDMI signals can be combined in a single wire.

LightPeak isn't even ready yet, Intel hasn't finished the actual product yet, let alone the spec that has to go with it.

Funny how that article makes it look like it's Apple's technology, while it's Intel who who are designing/developing it. Even funnier how there will not even be any products that use LP until 2012 at the earliest.

Oh yeah, because I've owned an astonishing amount of exactly 0 FireWire devices in the past 15 years, fantastic technology that Very Happy

LightPeak is a lot more promising though, and Intel will be pushing it rather than Apple, so that alone gives it a much bigger userbase. It's just funny how this is presented by all Appletards as an Apple product and idea. Just like OS X is a complete Apple product according to them (even though they bought the UNIX based Darwin Kernel), and Apple machines are very unique in their hardware (even though the only thing that sets them apart is the EFI instead of a traditional BIOS) Razz

Annoying how it's marketed as Apples technology when it's not. :/

But that's what they do. They take existing technology, repackage in soft white plastic and claim it's outrageously innovative. Razz

How do you mean? According to the rumour LightPeak will be included with the new batch of Macbook Pros. Which should be in the first half of 2011. And if Apple will be the first major manufacturer to sell LP devices... then I guess they'll take all the credit Very Happy

How the hell do they deserve any credit for the technique itself? More importantly, what on earth are they gonna ship with the MBP that can POSSIBLY need the bandwidth LP offers? Have you even read what LP is capable of? The only thing that might benefit from LP right now is the fact that it can be used like a bus itself, meaning multiple devices on one cable.

Here's your next problem though: Intel hasn't finalised the power supply spec yet. In other words, even a mouse can't run off it right now, because that needs power from somewhere.

And they're not the first, there's been some demos with storage devices already, and a few manufacturers have announced they've got products with LP planned. We'll most likely see some of these at CES in January Smile

Oh and these rumours were here a year ago as well, and none of the MB revisions in 2010 got LP Wink
