k so i said id wait till the end of the year, and the candy canes and fat dude with a white beard on my calender tells me its about that time...
so i was looking at nvidias gtx580
yay or nay? anyone know about the noise levels? im not expecting whisper quiet by any means, but im not keen on hearing a jet taking off every time i game...
but other than that - thoughts? worth getting? i know nvidia is launching something new in early 11, but is that really worth waiting for? is this a card worth getting that'll see me happy for the next couple of years?

What they're launching in early 2011 will be the GTX 560 (January 24th is the current due date), and a bit later on possibly a GTX 595 (dual-GPU card).
I wouldn't recommend getting a 580. A 570 or 6970 is a much better choice from a price/performance point of view; cheapest 580 over here is at least €120 more expensive than a 570 (~€330 vs ~€450), and for that you get around 10% extra performance, together with a bit more consumption and noise. Things aren't any better in the UK from what I can tell, £430 versus £280.
Moreover, a 580 is hard to get, and any of the cheaper ones will be on a pre-order basis, meaning you'll most likely get it somewhere mid-January. A 570 you can actually get at the prices above if you look hard enough.

What resolution do you play games on? Or are you considering purchasing a new monitor as well?

2560x1600, but if the game lets me without throwing a fit, ill run at a 1920x1080 window
but re: buying a new monitor... the 570 and 580 both have 2 dual link dvi and one mini hdmi port, yes? im thinking about getting a third (i allready have two monitors i use) monitor purely for 3d sometime down the road (movies mainly)
so the question is, can i use that mini hdmi port to hook up a 3d compatible monitor for use with nvidias 3d glasses thingy? or does the card only support two monitors max?

GTX580 is in a class of its own clearly the best card you can buy.
Nvidia raised the single GPU performance bar just out of sight of the competition this round.
The noise levels are well under control and will not disturb you even under heavy load. even when overclocked a GTX580 makes less noise than a stock speed HD69** series card.
It's simply the best GPU out there.
The flaw in its armour i would say is the price.
You are paying a substantual premium for this card.
Personally i am going to pick one up in january.
EDIT, yes you can use it for a 3d screen but you are limited to running 2 screens of a single card.
If you want to run 3 screens from a single card then you need a AMD product.

ok so refining the question:
is it simply a case of hooking all three screens up, then if i want to watch a 3d movie on the 3d screen, i just switch off one of the other 2 screens, and everything would run fine? essentially just making sure only 2 are on at a time.

Yes that would work fine.

No, you'll have to physically unplug one (either power or the display cable, either will do) if you're planning to run off a single NVIDIA card, turning it off in the NVCP might also be enough be enough. Physically turning it off won't do at least, as the card can detect the monitor even when it's turned off.
What Slizza says about 10 games with 3D Vision in the last year alone is also complete and utter bullshit, it's 10 games since March 2009. Rather than 10 games in 12 months, it's 10 games in 21 months. Of those 10 games I've actually played 6 of them in 3D, and only 1 really impressed me (Just Cause 2), but that's highly subjective. I suggest you try one of these games in 3D before actually purchasing based on that feature.
You say you want 3D mostly for movies yeah? Then there's no point in getting a 3D Vision monitor (of which there are only a handful), you're better off getting a normal 3D device that works with HDMI 1.4 or DisplayPort. Both NVIDIA and AMD are working hard to support these normal 3D devices, and now that both support it, there probably will be more games supporting 3D properly.
A breakdown for you:
- 3D movies: both do movies out of the box without weird gimmicks, any 3D display will do.
- 3D gaming: you'll need the NVIDIA 3D Vision kit and a monitor with the 3D Vision crap inside.
- 3 displays: 1 AMD card, or 2 NVIDIA cards
- 2560x1200 single display: the 6970 will edge out the 570 thanks to its 2 GB framebuffer, but both are good buys. The 580 will be slightly ahead of the 6970, but by no means enough to make the extra cost worth it.

yeah ok well i placed my order... decided to get the 570 instead... i mean its like 250 bucks (NZ) cheaper, and all the reviews ive seen, its only dropping like 10fps between the two cards more or less.... and besides, if i need more grunt for gaming at 2560x1600 res, i can opt for sli and pick up another 570, probably for even cheaper by the middle of next year.
thnx for the feedback.

I'm getting one of these from my job. Won't cost me anything. And actually it's a requirement so I can't say no if I want to do any work at home.
Poor 5970
