|

What I was wondering, I archive games and have the full intention of still playing today's games in 10,20 or 50 years, but what about something like Half life 2 ?
How long will they keep steam "online", what about in 10 or 20 years from now ?
I don't like the thought of not being able to play what I bought when the developer/publisher decides the game is "passé"....

-DJK-: I wouldn't worry. If Valve goes bankrupt or something, I'm sure that despite Newell, a patch will be released that bypasses the activation process. If not, some crafty pirate or other will hack the game and write such a tool. Even if that fails, there's always warez... *pats his hacked HL2 DVD*

In 50 years I will be sitting on a holodeck in a simulation of my room, on a simulation of my computer, playing a simulation of hl2, at a simulated 20fps.

The question is, will those backup cd's still work in 50 years?
I know some of my own cd's that are only 5 years old and the data peels off, once a small section peels the whole thing is useless.

Playing games in 50 years?
I thought i'd be raising my grandchildren, or working in the garden then at my good old age of "eternal boreddom".
How old are you? Do you remember those old prehistoric games on old pcs? Can you, for example, still play civilization 2 or kolonisation online? no.
Those programmers retire too. And im sure they dont give a fuck about a game anymore once they got their $$$. So i think steam will be as dead as a fucking, hmm, rock or so, whats more dead then that..
Have you seen the evolution of science and computers for the last decades?
I know that the contemporary discoveries concerning quantum mechanics and relativity theory are reaching the borders of useful-things-to-do-with-it-on-earth. So I don't really think we should see some weirdo discoverys on pcs in the near future. To be honest, pcs didnt evoluate that much the last 10 years. HDS got bigger, RAM memory bigger, CPUS faster... but thats is.
We now have broadband for the masses, but we reached the limits too. NASA uses the same technology these days as everyone else.
We have some faster cars now, but F1 cars went at 300kmph in 1970 already.
Planes got safer, and a bit faster, but where the CONCORDE? gone, so we go a bit slower again.
Just wanted to say that, imho, we wont see a shocking change in the world soon. People said 20 years ago, we 'd live on the moon, and be driving hoovering, super aerodynamic cars. LOL, watch your street; i dont see any.
Things come, things go, but slowly the world will evoluate, and your steam will slowly disappear and fade away into the few minds that once loved to play all day long. And in 20 years, no one will even remember it ever existed.
