Quote: | Apart from the jump to 4K resolution (3840 × 2160p) we can also expect 4K Blu-ray to support higher frame rates (up to 60fps), an expanded color gamut along with high dynamic range (HDR), as well as HEVC/H.265 encoding to compress 4K movies more efficiently and allow for higher bit rates. The group is currently exploring the possibility of increasing the disc capacity to 66GB or 100GB. |
Can't wait for the 2GB YIFY 4K 48fps rips of the 2K DI'd Hobbit movies upscaled by the studio!
Spoiler: | I'm actually excited for a few movies |

I can hardly find space to store 720p\1080p bluray rips...and now this!
1) Lenovo Legion 7 (AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, RTX 3080 16Gb, 32Gb DDR4, SSD 1TB +2TB
2) SFFPC (streaming via Moonlight+ Sunshine)

Couldn't care less about 4K to be honest, but I'm happy they're FINALLY going to support 60 FPS. The impact of this will be huge compared to 'just' another resolution improvement.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

Once x265 matures, 4K encodes will not be as large as you might mistakenly imagine.

@LeoNatan it is still in the early stages of development, doesn't support features x264 has, buggy and EXTREMELY SLOW. We need considerably more powerful CPUs and Intel has been slacking for a while now.

Also, current Intel CPUs (Ivy Bridge-E, Haswell-E) have been improving encode times considerably due to IPC optimizations and additional cores. Who's been slacking is AMD, who has thrown the towel and stopped competing.

Uhm, on a 1080p display, you are better off with a studio encode of 1080p, rather than feeding it 4K source and letting it or your player doing the rescaling. On anything above 1080p, 4K is preferable, of course.

Yes, yes, same tired and incorrect argument of 1080p vs. 720p. No.

I was making a point about how something looks, I'm not trying to talk about tech specs or how to make things look better.
My point is if you take the 4k footage from the shop and put it on a decent 1080p a lot of people will think that 1080p screen is 4k.

All depends on the lounge room
Let's assume a 50" TV. Minimum distance you need to be from the TV for each resolution to become "retina"*:
- 1280x720: 293cm (117in for the Imperial impaired)
- 1920x1080: 198cm (78in for the Imperial impaired)
- 3840x2160: 99cm (78in for the Imperial impaired)
The main point here is that 1080p may or may not be as sharp as it gets on a TV of this size, whereas 4K is pretty much guaranteed unless you sit way too close to begin with.
If you go down to, say 42", those distances become 249/168/84 centimeters (or 98/66/33 in toddler measurements). Even then, 1080p may not be enough for some people (I think I'm close to that number myself, never really measured it).
It's not as clear cut as "useless" or "obviously better". In a bedroom there's no point to a 4K TV for example. Unless it's a 60+ inch TV at the foot end of a child's crib or you use binoculars to watch, the TV's never gonna be close enough for 4K to make a difference over 1080p.
* Retina meaning that someone with 20/20 vision can no longer discern individual pixels. More resolution beyond that will continue to improve sharpness slightly, but this will be very subtle.

Sounds awesome and exciting, but then I remember that I'm still on a 3.8Mbit connection and below average TN panel from 2011. Ya'll laugh, but the next generation of YIFI releases is indeed something that I'll be looking forward to in the future

Bought while ago 58" 4K TV, this is good news :>. 4K material looks ridiculously good, tho you need PC connected to the TV to actually get good quality for now.
