Actually ati is working on it's realto-bridge wich will be similiar to the HSI chip from nvidia to be able to run native pcie cards on the agp bus.

Yes I heard about that. I also saw the new double graphics solution from SIS that won't use a bridge and perform better.

hmm do tell me some more details. I'm looking to upgrade soon but i really dont want to give up my Radeon 9700 PRO, on top of that i dont want to be limited on my graphics upgrades for the future. I think you can see the predicament im in. Do you think there's a AGP-to-PCIE bridge coming out soon, that would really save my ass. I'd be able to buy a PCIE mobo and still use my AGP graphics card |
you got me wrong with my post [mrt]. The bridges i was referring to are not for the agp bus on the mainboard itsself, meaning they don't add an agp bus to the northbridge of the 915/925. So these bridges are necessary for graphics cards wich gpu's are made for pcie to run on agp slots. So if ati finishes their development of the realto-bridge they can offer the x700 with agp bus e.g.
Now to your question . There are already boards wich feature "some sort" of agp bus on an pcie board. But since 915/925 chipsets don't have an agp bus, these agp slots are connected via the pci bus to the chipset. You can tell by that, that this solution is not very fast. Even worse, not every agp card can be used in these special slots, you have to look for a compatibiliy list to make sure. Now the only board i know of wich has this special agp is the Elitegroup 915P-A.

You can also use your DDR-Ram on this board, but reviews in the german hardware mag c't were not good.
Here is the compatibility list (not very long imo, and in the review, not all cards listed here worked)

Elitegroup do have some more of these combo boards, but it's not the best brand.
So i don't think there will ever be a real agp slot and an pcie graphics port on one board as long as no chipset supports this. I don't know if nvidia, via or sis is planning on such a chip. If you want to buy a pcie system you also have to get a new gfx card

Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition PCIE - $549
GeForce 6800 Ultra 256MB Extreme AGP - $553
Judging from those tests Radeon is about 25-30% faster. Good deal.
now ... am I ever spending $500+ on a video card? My pockets are fairly deep but thats too much for me.
