Quote: | GR: Do you see another sequel, licensed game, or an original title coming out of Obsidian after DS3?
FU: There's nothing that's been moved forward, but we'd love to develop Dungeon Siege 4. On the flip side I think as a studio we have some original ideas and stories to tell. We have a great idea for a new world we've just started pitching to publishers and we have an older pitch that we really like called "Defiance" which is about a fantasy world where, basically, Sauron won. Everything isn't happy in The Shire, they didn't get the ring in the fire and the hobbits are all dead. We think that's a cool pitch and we hope to have a publisher pick that up at some point.
We're also working on an original IP XBLA game. so that hopefully will be out first quarter next year.
GR: I deal with so many of those, so I love seeing bigger developers explore that space.
FU: It'll be an action RPG that's focused on fun, not Dungeon Siege, it's quite a bit different in a different genre with a different camera.
We also might throw our hat in the whole free-to-play thing. In the game industry there's a lot of different opportunities for all different kinds of products.
GR: It's great that you can take an IP that's not original but you can do something completely different and fresh and new.
FU: There actually is another game that I can't talk about at all.
GR: Are you sure?
FU: No, I'll get killed, but it's a licensed product but it's a licensed product that when people hear about it they're going to be "well you had to do that. there's no option, if I was a developer and I was offered that I would just do it."
I'm hoping that'll be announced around E3. |
If I counted correctly, that's 5 different pitches/games... Same old Obsidian...
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

Arcanum would be nice.
And 5 titles in production? Hardly - one is just a pitch/idea (doesn't even qualify for pre-production at that point - bet they have loads of those), one a small XBLA game, a free-to-play game they're just considering + the unannounced title. Obsidian has lots of employees and DS3 development is on the final stretch so if anything I'd expect another big title already in the works (not some XBLA game).
Edit: Oh right, they do have that Wheel of Time RPG in active development afaik.

I believe from other hints it has been determined to be Icewind Dale 3.

Fuckers need to stop working on so many projects and get back to work on Aliens RPG and Alpha Protocol 2. Screw Sega, that company couldn't fail any harder than it already is, go find a new publisher.

I don't want them to revive any old IPs since they'll just make them into multiplat "RPGs".
Arcanum: Of Hacks and Slashes.

So what, better to let the IPs rot then? A sequel wouldn't in any way lessen the original(s), and Obsidian did well enough with New Vegas imo. Sure I would've preferred something more similar to FO1 & 2, but that just isn't realistic these days.

Because they might as well just not use the IP if it's not gonna be anything at all like the original.
The gaming industry is almost worse than Hollywood already.

IIRC Sega owns all rights to both games. So even if Obsidian wanted to develop those titles, they couldn't w/o SEGA saying so.

Alpha Protocol is Obsidian's IP. An ex-Obsidian dev said so. For Aliens you are right.

Arcanum's world setting is much more interesting than your generic high fantasy setting tho, and at least Obsidian would try to make it similar to the original (as opposed to Bethesda, for example).
Neither of you liked NV then? Bethesda managed to mess some things up pretty nicely and Obsidian did quite well, when you consider the established constraints set by FO3.
Also, I'm not seeing how Obsidian's Arcanum could turn into a rapefest of the original with a 100% certainty.

We're on the same page then. Djaoni may be as well, I just got the impression from his post that Obsidian couldn't in a million years make an Arcanum sequel worthy of the original so they might as well not even try.

I'm not saying they can't make a proper Arcanum. I am just saying that I really doubt it'd be anything but another hack n slash/shooter in the Arcanum world. That's all fine once in a while, but every single remake has been like that so far. I'd just like to see a proper remake/sequel with just updated graphics and improvements.
If they're just gonna keep remaking games like we've seen plenty of times so far then I'd rather see some original IPs since it seems all we're getting are remakes and sequels.
Whatever the case, Icewind Dale 3 that plays like Dungeon Siege 3 coming up.

Wasn't Icewind Dale 2 just a hack'n'slash anyhow? Where BG/BG2 were the sprawling RPG epics, the IWD series were geared more towards H'n'S Diablo types.

Yep you and me both. IWD 3 could be nice, tho from what I hear the later AD&D editions have gotten more and more retarded (and WotC isn't too big on games using the older rulesets).

Yes Icewind Dale focused more on the combat part and wasn't as open as Baldur's Gate.

They should really concentrate on one game fully, I don't like Obsidian much anymore. Good ideas are nice, but if those are ruined by shitty design and bugs it becomes irritating. "There's a gem underneath this turd" is getting ridiculous now when applied to Obsidian games. I'm getting pissed with the fact that every game made by these guys needs atleast a month of patching before the bugs are sorted. Surely by their xth bug infested game someone should ask "maybe we need to fire our current retard coders and hire some people who actually know wtf they're doing".

yeah man, good times....
I'd like to believe that something good will come from obsidian but somehow I'm expecting whatever they're working on to be shit like 95% of all games that come out these days.
I did love icewind dale 1&2 but well, we know what happened to bioware so the same thing is probably gonna hit obsidian. the derp virus is going around.

The same could have been said for BioWere at first. There was no way people would expect Bioware of succumbing to derphood.... but it happened. It's only a matter of time for Obsidian too.

Yeah exactly.
Don't get me wrong, I love obsidian so far, it's just my fear so to speak that they'll end up going down the same 'streamlining' road that other great developers went for.

Tbh that was easy to predict after EA acquired them. As long as Obsidian stays independent, there's still hope.

You honestly believe this will happen with The Old Republic MMO?
