There was a time when Brian Reynolds was best known for his work on epic computer strategy games like Civilization II, Rise of Nations and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. But nowadays he's the poster child for the casualfication of gaming.
It was Reynolds and his work on FrontierVille that proved to a lot of people, both game players and game makers, that Zynga and its steady march of Ville games, could deliver meaty, fun gaming experiences.
It was Reynolds' FrontierVille that convinced Bruce Shelley, Civilization designer and the father of Age of Empires, to jump ship and make his way over to the world of casual and social game making. Folks like Ultima's Richard Garriott, Dante's Inferno's Jonathan Knight and Doom's John Romero all seem to be following suit.
This is not OK with me. I don't want the people who made some of my favorite games laboring away at the next big Facebook title. And that's what I told Reynolds.
"I understand there's a wondering about what's going to happen," he said. "I don't think that traditional hardcore games are going to go away. I think they are going to keep making those. But it's a consolidated industry and now there are only these several gigantic franchises.
"I wouldn't start a triple-A studio these days. Ten years ago, it almost felt like when we started Big Huge, 'Wow, good thing we did it then because we never could have done it after that because the door was closing.'"
At the same time that people like Reynolds think the door is shutting on the ability to craft and publish big new gaming franchises, a window opened to the world of casual and social game development. A really big window.
"The strategy genre kind of mostly went away," he said. "There's still StarCraft, they're still making some of those things, but for the little guys who can only spend $10 million to make a game, it stopped really happening.
"But it turns out that the skills we have are really valuable in social games and it's actually really fun to design those games. First of all, I'm working on the forefront of a new thing. Second of all, I'm reaching billions, tens of billions of players I could never have reached before. And third, I really need my skills. It's harder to design these games. We do the same things we did with strategy games: Design simple systems that interact in complex ways, but they have to be so much more accessible then they used to."
Reynolds says he knows the hate some gamers, especially hardcore gamers, direct at Zynga and their Mafia Wars, CityVille and FarmVille games. But he thinks that's changing.
"I saw a big change in their attitude this year when FrontierVille came out, when CityVille came out," he said. "I suddenly started getting letters from folks that said they wanted to work at Zynga."
While the endless reports of PC gaming's death are an exaggeration, its metamorphosis seems inevitable.
When I mentioned to Blizzard president Michael Morhaime the common refrain that PC gaming was dead, his first defense was pointing to World of Warcraft. His second? Facebook.
We all know PC gaming isn't going to die, what this thread is about is how do you feel if most PC exclusives are going to be.. facebook games?

Seriously. Indeed PC gaming should die if this is a glimpse of the future. Gaming is almost dead anyway, so no big loss.

What am I supposed to say? I'd be happy?
Obvious answer is obvious, and there's nothing we can do to bring the golden days back.
Maybe the future will be slightly less "2012-esque" than how this article is trying to depict, but surely the room for improvement is minimal, considering that the next generation of consoles will probably make the things even worse.

As long as european and eastern european studios continue producing games like Divinity 2, Risen, Stalker, Metro 2033 I'm good.
I wouldn't mourn seeing franchises like CoD, Assassins Creed, Splinter Cell, Crysis, Medal of Honor, etc without a PC version.

See this is why I posted this though.
Reynolds says everyone that doesn't have more than 10mil, should abandon the "hardcore" market and instead focus on creating facebook games.
So according to him these are exactly the devs that are more likely to create facebook games.
On the other hand "CoD, Assassins Creed, Splinter Cell, Crysis, Medal of Honor" will very likely continue to have a PC version..

Imo the true gulity ones for this development are the people who are actually playing all this shitville garbage. I'm proud to say that I never played any browser game in my entire life! Why should anyone bother with this crap when there are real games? I don't get it.

Most of the people who are playing that crap on daily basis have never seen nor played a real videogame in their life. This is why they are the majority..

Don't worry, with KINCEST (TM) and PLAYSTATION_4_DUMMIES (R) they will get to see and play "real" videogames soon enough

I don't get this golden days of gaming stuff.
What were the 'golden days of gaming'? The original prince of persia? Pacman? Space invaders?
This PC gaming is going to die shit is really blown over the top.
If being gamer meant that you were locked in your room 24/7 playing games, than I'll pass.
PC gaming is as it always was: PC gaming. You played the game, you enjoyed it more or less and you moved on. If the game had any replay value you'd keep it if you'd feel sudden onset of nostalgia, if not: delete (or store on the shelf for ppl like Epsilon , no offense).
All this butthurt comes from console derps.
So you have this feeling of deja-vu when playing games. Ok, have you watched movies lately? Originality is hard to find these days. You can even say that it's sort of gaming evolution. You can only be creative so much.
If you are, you'll have a great product, and ppl will enjoy it, good for you (game creator/developers). If you don't you'll soon be forgotten and you'll be replaced by some other who'll probably (but not necessary) do the same crappy job as you did and the 'circle of game life' goes on.
So there will be games on facebook. Fine. If you dig it go for it. That certainly doesn't mean that developers will stop creating games for PCs.
Kinda felt I needed to say that...

Have you people never heard of webbbased games? They are not new. Facebook has a huge userbase, of course they'll focus on it to some degree. He did not say they'll be dropping SC2 and Diablo3 in favor of Facebook games. Come on now, this thread is ridiculous. Now you're just looking for shit to bitch about.

I think pc gaming is about to blow up with awesomeness or change for the unknown.
I think gamers in general (both pc and console) mainly PC gamers but we're tired of the same ole same ole it has been since the 360 came out.
I've noticed with some devs they want to make the game bigger and better and they are starting to come out of their box with the limitations on console and giving us PC gamers some back so we can enjoy the game as they wanted it to be.
I only think this will get better but it will start all over again with the next release of the next gen console.... back to square 1 shit ports again.

Personally i think the hardware racket is as much to blame as anything else. Constant hardware revisions on GFX cards to get an extra 10fps at a premium, packing the cards with features a chunk of the games rlsd dont even utilize properly so in between rls cycles you get maybe 2 or 3 AAA titles that utilize the hardware. The lack of standardization puts off the consumor, i mean joe blow doesnt wanna be teaking gfx settings and stuff, they wanna load hit start and play.
Thats what consoles have that the PC doesnt, you want to play a game, you put in in start it and play, no system requirements, no driver updates. It truely does hurt the PC gaming industry, to have a thriving industry you need sales.

what if this is the future of pc gaming?
"With the xbox that plugs into the pc, put a game in and play with mouse/keyboard, however with DLC you can unlock the extra PC exclusives (since it's plugged into your computer)"
like resolutions, high res textures, and AA.

BTW PS4 could be 5 years away from release: http://www.redmondpie.com/sony-playstation-4-ps4-release-date-five-years-away/
“As regards home consoles, the PS3 was put into business in 2006, and it has a 10 year life cycle…I think the value of the PS3 will continue to rise. Because of this, a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now.“
Also MS definitely doesn't need a new Xbox right now, as thanks to Kinect they can market their old, cheap to make, hardware to an entirely new audience.

oh and when you plug that xbox into a pc, it injects it with a virus a virus that enables voice recognition for two days before kicking in and when it does, it'll start with the gay porn videos and when your friends all run away and you come back ready to bash the computer..... Great steam deals have already popped up and your purchase info is already filled in because microsoft and valve have teamed up.
Meanwhile gabe is jerking off to the gayporn.
THIS is our future of PC gaming.

so in 2015-2016 you will see new consoles from Sony and MS ,and those old consoles will replace the ps2/wii niche of casual gaming systems
