So Im sitting here playing The Saboteur and come to the conclusion this and GTA IV are the only ones I've played ( and ive played them all I think) that hasn't sucked complete nut.

-Mafia II was crap, all it was, was a mafia themed gta TAXI game right down to the retarded buying cloths.
-I didn't care for the GTA's started on 3
-Wasn't a fan of Saints Row
-Just cause 2 was alright, maybe I just didn't give it enough time but god the voice acting bugged me.

Were the mercenaries games any good? Gameplay/Story wise?

Mercenaries 2 (first one was only on xbox) was ok - blowing up buildings was fun, and the different types of airstrikes could be nifty as well. Some of the later missions got annoying but there's trainers available if you lack the patience.

Did you play Red Faction: Guerrilla? It's got zones instead of one large world map, but it's still fun enough and the engine for destructible buildings is unparalleled.

You should also look into free-roaming RPG's, if you're the type that likes to slowly build up your character and explore every nook and cranny, they're the best thing ever. Bethesda's games, Gothic series (and Risen), Divine Divinity 2, Two Worlds (I liked it, tho many didn't Razz) just to name a few recent ones.

You really liked The Saboteur? Confused
I think that sucked if something. :S

And the older GTA's is fucking awesome.
I still play the first time from time, and the second one is also worth a try.

OOOOOOOOOOO I forgot about RFG, that was fun in the beginning but after you liberated a few zones it got stale.

Ya, I generally dig the story line and the general game play of it.

as I said, I liked the original GTA's up till they got to GTA3 on the PS and vice city and all those other ones.

yeah not liking the later GTA's i dont get either..

Us free roaming fans are in for a treat this/next month: TW2, FO New Vegas, Gothic4... though i DOUBT any of them will be as good as Gothic2...

The Xenus games and Precursor games are quite good and RPG'ish.

It sucks that you can't take any alternate routes anywhere (this is what free roaming is all about, climbing / jumping - being in complete control of where you go in the game Smile ). Even if there's a 1" high obstacle you can't pass it and have to stick to the layed out route because this super agile hero you're playing can't jump Laughing

I really dislike games where the devs shows you where to go all the time, it's lame, why not make a movie instead if they prefer linear layouts so much..

Since no-one has mentioned it yet; Dwarf Fortress, maybe not free roam, but definitely sandbox.

Epsilon: Morrowind - forever and always Very Happy

I tried Assassin's Creed 2 just recently because i've heard some good things about it. But damn, it's so fake in everything it does Sad Everything from the fighting to the free roaming. The free roaming feels limited and very disjointed + i hated the constant fucking "cyber flashes" and swooshing sounds and whatnot, the game fucking spams you with it.

What better way to destroy immersion in a game then to remind you, constantly, that what you're doing is a simulation. yes im playing a simulation (a game), but if i forget the creators made sure you wouldnt by letting you play a simulation inside a simulation. Also, fucking italians sounding like Mario, man did that got tiresome really quick. "Itsa meee maaaaaaaaaario" - yeah that makes me sooo immersed in your game, thanks. Laughing

Just Cause 2 is the new king of sandbox, I would slap that magnificent engine onto every new sandbox game, explosions are the best ever. It always amazes me how you can see a building 15 km away and approach it while it slowly gets bigger and bigger, talk about view distance.

Wish we could mod the hook strength in the game... I love attaching the hook to those gas bottles and other end onto people and then blasting the bottles to the space Razz The rope just breaks quite often.

This.

While playing the game and being mostly an RPGames fan, I kept whining inside about what a loss that engine is (alongside the huge splendid world) for an open-ended RPG.

I would imagine a game similar to Oblivion taking place in that huge magnificent place.

San Andreas was best imo. The exploration was so much better than in the other GTA's and the missions were varied and very fun, overall the best GTA.

It's amazing just how much of a stepback GTA4 is compared to the earlier games, especially Vice and San Andreas... all for the sake of "graphics!" Sad

it wasnt light hearted for one... too 'gritty'... not over the top cartoony hilarity like the other ones.. also it just never felt engaging for me - game just became too bland and generic... atleast far as i was concerned.

soundtrack sucked too.
