Quote: | With the War Face online game, then, is Crytek suggesting how studios can prosper with PC exclusivity?
Well, there are some misinterpretations in the press regarding Crytek and PC gaming. We want to make it very clear that, for us, PC gaming is very important. This is something which was misunderstood after the launch of the first Crysis, and to this day we are still trying to correct it. PC gaming, and online, is a natural evolution for us.
When I go home and play Crysis 2, I do so on the PC. The business model must change, though, in order to adapt to what the PC market has become. What we said after the release of Crysis and what we say today is that PC games will be difficult to make unless they go online, or if they go multiplatform. That’s what we stand for – if a game is PC-exclusive, it has to go online. |
I think this is indeed something that is happening now.
There are also many other interesting things in the interview to read, also:
- I thought Far Cry 2 was built by Ubisoft’s own tech?
- …I don’t think so.

How is that an explanation? Why would a PC game HAVE to go online?

But he didn't say any SP game. He was talking about SP games that are PC exclusives and he said you aren't going to see many of those.
And it's true. What are the most recent SP PC exclusives from a big publisher/with decent budgets? Crysis & The Witcher from 2007, 4 years ago? In any case very few.

I think he is totally right. There is a big chunk of people that buy games when there is no release for 3 -7 days…. Many of those derps would buy those multiplayer games .
Unfortunately this strategy only works well for “real” multiplayer games, it has a negative effect on single player, because the multiplayer mode takes away many development hours from the real game, and no one cares about it anyway

Another suggestion might be to not spend so stupidly much on each and every game, so you don't need 100 million sales to make a profit.

As far as Crytek are concerned they have enough $$$ to spend without worrying that it's a bad investment.

He is 100% right.
IF... You are a company who develops games like Crytek, where their games are masturbatory-technology-fests where big budget - and therefore requiring big profit - trumps everything else. Unfortunately this used to be less so with them, however statements like these and their changing focus demonstrates this.
But of course he completely ignores the exploding market for games which have small budgets and either focus on story or innovation.
To counter his point The Witcher, STALKER, Torchlight and many many others sell millions of copies. But obviously when you are focused on the bottom line, these games don't figure in the bigger picture since they only were successful, not Blockbusters.
I really hope he eats crow when he says "the market must change" and that BS. Fuck the mega-publishers and their soulless games. I don't want online-only and I sure as hell don't want shitty dumbed down console ports(ie multiplatform).
Core i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz | 6GB OCZ DDR3 8-8-8-24 @ 1600mhz | eVga x58 Mobo | 2 x eVga GTX 460 SLI | Intel X25-M + 3x Seagate + WD Black = 2.75TB | X-Fi Titanium | PCP&C Silencer 750 | G15 KB | G5 Mouse | G35 Headset | Z-5500 Digital | Samsung T260HD

Once games become photo realistic they won’t need to invest so much on tools and engines related to the graphic aspect, which should make games a lot cheaper….For a lot of people graphics are super important, that’s why they invest so much .
Imho investing in better graphics is safer than investing on a better story or gameplay. For me the latter seem more like art, So more money doesn’t really translate to better quality

And everybody would bitch and moan how the game looks and sounds like shit and how not every piece of text is voice acted.

So you wouldn't mind if they cut the budget for say Witcher 2 by 90%, thereby lessening the graphics quality and voice acting etc?

Nope I would not.
My favorite games are 2D and have barely any voice acting.
