|

Quote: | EA has quietly done away with printed manuals for its games, instead replacing them with manuals included on the game discs.
EA Sports spokesperson Rob Semsey has confirmed to Kotaku that the firm did away with manuals as of March 1, marked by the release of Fight Night Champion. |

There we go - the final reason to buy a game in a box has finally disappeared, making pirated versions now identical without the draconian DRM. I'm not surprised EA seems to tag multi player onto any game they release now - it's the only way they can prevent their games from being massively pirated.

The manual was a reason to buy a game in a box instead of pirating?! (and while we are at it why the alternative is pirating instead of buying it from a dd service?)

its not environmentally conscious to print lots of useless paper as it was a decade ago and EA will potentially pass the savings on to the consumer (like free official EA Battlefield servers for players which cost a fortune for EA to run 24/7 but cost nothing to the playerbase)
deny ignorance

actually i find it sad that theyre doing away with printed manuals. no manuals on their own arent a reason NOT to pirate, but its a good contributing fact for me in the decision.
the tangible side of a product is a good reason for me to buy it. beautiful game box, well written and enjoyable manual (i had some great lulz with the quake one).. its all part of the fun and enjoyment that i got out of a game purchase.
these days though.. you get a shitty generic plastic case, and a disc. i miss NOTHING if i just pirate the thing, except i dont get the enjoyment of being harassed by anti piracy measures.
we've had this conversation before.
i miss good quality packaging and contents... it was part... a big part.. of the thrill of new games coming out... looking at the box art.. opening.. taking the stuff out, seeing what was inside.. leafing through a nice colour glossy manual while the game was loading...
its excitement (to me) that you just dont see in gaming anymore, because its just not seen as being important by game companies, so to me its a symptom of the gaming industry losing another bit of 'magic' that it once had.

Games are so easy now and everything you need to do is surrounded in glowing yellow, there is no need for a manual.

i dont think ive ever seen manuals as a 'need'. i mean some simulators, sure, but its never been about necessity of the information inside for me.

They're just bathroom reading material to me, at best.
The only manual I've ever really appreciated was the text book of a manual that came with Falcon 4.0. Don't remember how many pages but it was probably an inch thick. And I read it all.

Those kind of games are the ones that need manuals.
If they ditch manuals for fps games and such...it wont matter much. However, ditching the manual for a game like Black Shark would be really really bad.

ArmA2, or maybe AA expansion, has some kind of quick manual - showing default controls for infantry, vehicles, planes etc - that's one of the most useful things recently. Probably only game where I needed it at first.

One game that tutorial worth reading is Heart of Iron II
That thing is like 240 pages long, I printed it out but it creeps me out when I stare at it, to it has been laying there for a year now.
i still sometimes dont know what the fuck is going on in that game but someday I will getmyself to read all those pages

The only time I've ever really read a manual is on the bus on the way home from buying the game. With the exception of complex simulations of course.
Dump the things.

There's a shocking turn of events that nobody saw coming, honest. So now EA saves even MORE money... but do you think they'll lower the prices of their games? Heh, good luck on that one.

That's not really a specific EA problem. All publishers save a big chunk of money I think since the transition to digital distribution. Which one of them lowered prices? It's a bussiness, they'll screw the customer whichever way they can.

+1
Not to mention the fact that the actual games are so accessible that a manual is completely useless
