So it seems that my 4890 went tits up with the Crysis 2 beta(not the beta itself, it the final nail in it's coffin ).

I looked around and I can find some 5850 at 169€, but I'm wondering which should I buy.
I'll be checking some reviews, but I'd like to now what you guys think about these:

- Asus EAH5850 DirectCU
- MSI R5850 Twin Frozr II
- PowerColor PCS+ HD5850 1GB GDDR5

So, opinions?

BTW, a GTX460 isn't out of the question, but I'm seeing those only 5-10€ cheaper than these 5850's.
I'm not planning to use eyefinity but even then the 5850 is slightly better, right? RIGHT?
Or should I go with the 460 for the 1337 PhysX effects?

Visually, I'd go for the MSI just for its classy and uber-looking cooling system. Laughing

As for the raw power of the two cards in question - 5850 is faster. Around 5-10% more than the 460.

No Sapphire Vapor-X around you? I'm seeing that at €160 here in NL, and as far as I know that's still #1 when it comes to cooling and noise Smile

And yes, the 5850 is ahead of the 460.

Long card is long. Sad

Can you mail me one?
Cause the cheapest 6870 I'm seeing here is 210€.
If it was at that price it would be a no-brainer.

Fucking hell, the same goes for the Powercolor PCS+ apparently.

The MSI model seems like the logical choice, if you bring add msi afterburner to the picture and the fact that of the three it is the most readily available.
But it's cooling solution will probably raise my ambient temps a bit... Neutral

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from the top of my head the Vapor-X has the same PCB length as the stock version, and with the cooler being slightly smaller, that should be more than fine?

Don't confuse it with the TOXIC edition, that's an overclocked card and is like 0.75 inches longer or so!

MSI AB = RivaTuner = Works with any videocard, regardless of chip type or brand Smile

According to AnandTech, both the Vapor-X and the Toxic have a custom PCB:
Quote:
Today Sapphire is launching a pair of Radeon HD 5850 cards: the 5850 Vapor-X and the 5850 Toxic Edition. Both of these cards use a new custom design – a custom PCB, custom chokes, and of course a custom cooler – making the set of them the first custom 5850 on the market.

They could be wrong on this, though.
Anyway, it doesn't matter.
Turns out that I have something like ~80€ on my bank account and that this 4890 is still within the 2 year warranty period so I'll send it back.

Meanwhile, I'll be rocking it with my old 8800GTS 320Mb. Laughing

Yeah, I know the drill.
Not my first memtest and I was hoping to never have to use it again. Sad

I probably should try running the game at my default CPU speed before using memtest (or before running memtest at all), but I'll do all that tomorrow.
Or even pulling out the sticks, cleaning the contacts with a soft eraser and placing them back again.

Turns out it IS from the 4890. Laughing
From the 4890 and from something else since with the 8800GTS the game did crash, only in a different way.

Going to try running it with everything at stock speeds and with a couple of different memory sticks now.

YEAH BABY I IS GLAD!!11!!1
ASUS fucked up with my 4890 so the store sent me one of these.
Seems to be running Crysis 2 at the high preset better than my old 4890, although the 4890 was running the beta.

BTW, is there any way to improve image sharpness via Catalyst?
2D is looking blurrier than with my 8800GTS. Sad

I got the same card today and image is blurry as fuck. Fixed it a little with adding sharpness on my monitor and some brightness presets.

And one more thing, if you have a vga monitor, can you check the second Dvi ? For some reason they put DVI-D instead of 2 DVI-I Laughing

Yeah, changing it on the monitor fixed it.

Seems like 2 Dual Link DVI-I:

Tried connecting the DVI/D-Sub adapter to the 2nd output instead and nothing happened ( I'm on a VGA monitor ).

Is there any major difference DVI-D / DVI-I anyway?
Dunno much about DVI, poor people use VGA monitors anyway. Embarassed

Anyway, gonna check out the performance improvements for GTA4 now.
