The title is misleading. It should be "Crysis MODS as a work of art".

Since when is the tool considered art?

Do you go and say "Canvas as a work of art?" Or "Sound vibrations as a work of art?" Art is art, regardless of the medium. Here some artists used a good tool, but as we know from Crysis 2, the tool is hardly art. Wink

But what is art??? Saying "Art is art" doesn't really say anything about art Wink

and also the outcome isn't art.

EDIT: This (the first two pictures) yes, it can be considered art.

Art is what makes you interested. It is what makes you feel something. CryEngine 3 maybe art in the source code area, but it is hardly any art in the sense brought here. What I meant by "art is art", is what you see in the gallery is the artist's use of a tool to create something that looks good to you.
By the way, for me this is not art. This is a testament to how evolved real-time computer graphics have become, but the art direction for me is boring.
Another World is art. That is, the game is used to showcase the artistic abilities of its creator.
Amazing graphical engine, high-res textures and high poly models in themselves are hardly art.

Very sensible answer Smile Also, I think that the use of the term "art" have watered down real art.
Example: in the 90's I began to notice American game developers labelling their game visuals as "Art", and I remember thinking; "Hmm, your game looks good but Imho, real visual art is something like a painting by Rembrandt or Picasso etc."

But of course Art can be many things, like some crazy "1000 people starts dancing in the street" like happening, and your right, the celebration of new tech is not art in itself.

But it can still look pretty Smile

Leo, don't you think that taking screenshots in the right games can be art? It's like virtual photography in games, at least that's how I see it.

That clearly isn't what I meant, but funny nonetheless Laughing. Anyway, is THIS not art? And of course, as it has been said before, what art is can be different to two or more persons and it can mean a lot of things.

NO

art is independent of medium and time.

What makes it look good is knowing its a real time rendering capable engine. If you take the game engine XXX label from those pictures it looks average CG work.
