I've read topics around in the hardware thread but just need a little help;

What do you think of this?

Intel i5 655K OC Unlocked, S1156, Clarkdale, 3.2GHz, DMI 2.5GT/s, 4MB Cache, 24xCore Ratio, 73W
Asus P7P55 LX, Intel P55 Express, S1156, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR3 2200(OC), SATA 3Gb/s, SATA RAID, ATX
6GB (3x2GB) Corsair Vengeance, DDR3 PC3-12800 (1600) Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, XMP, 1.50V

or

6GB (3x2GB) Corsair XMS3 Classic, DDR3 PC3-10666 (1333) Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 9-9-9-24, 1.65V
which is £15 cheaper.

I dont need anything else, thoughts?

An i5-760 costs exactly the same as the 655K and will clock just as far, but that's a quad core. Any reason why you went for the 655 in particular?

And I'd stick with Vengeance, I've got XMS3 at the moment and I'm not happy with it. Will be replacing this soon :E

Then I recommend the 760. Games won't use the extra cores, but most other things will and it's an insane overclocking monster. I can do 4.4 on air, 'nuff said Razz

Good choice, though depending on the size of your build you'd probably be better off with the H70

Haha. So is it worth getting a good motherboard or something in between? Nothing dirt cheap.

The one you have selected there should be fine, may want to check some reviews to see if there's any problems, but I doubt it Smile

But of course! It's the internet, don't you know? We're all rockstars here, baby!

I've always been of the opinion; never go cheap on the motherboard or PSU. Cheap motherboard = cheap components. If something breaks on the mobo, it could well take the entire system with it. Same deal with the PSU. You don't need to spend £200++ on a mobo, but I wouldn't go less than £100 and *certainly* nothing from ASCock. They're the ECS/EliteGroup of this generation Laughing

Why would you say that? I've got an asrock p67 extreme4 and it's one hell of a motherboard. I've got everything that I need on it, it has a really good and user-friendly UEFI design (as opposed to the messy one MSI has, for instance Laughing), and it overclocks pretty high and easy. Actually the overclocking of Sandy Bridge pretty much depends on the processor. The MB has a secondary role as the overclocking procedure is done by multiplier and rarely by adjusting the base clock. I'm quite pleased with what if offers.

Actually, Asrock have grown quite much for the eight years of its existence. I think it's one of the main MB manufacturers now. And with the new 6th gen. chipset by Intel they've hit the jackpot with all their new MBs.

I'm going by my own experience (and plenty of other customer feedback) on the extremely low quality of ASRock. They always used to be pure budget class stuff, dirt cheap to buy and with dirt cheap components, the very essence of the "budget" arm of Asus. Hell, they were founded to compete (Laughing) with ECS and FoxConn. Please don't tell me you rate ECS, or EliteGroup as they used to be known, anything higher than dog shit Wink

... though admittedly this was a good few years ago. Memories are pretty long when it comes to low quality stuff.

Low speed, high timings, poor build quality, prone to overheating. They're Corsair's budget line, for people who want Corsair RAM without Corsair prices Very Happy

Asrock is fine nowadays Sabin. They did suck a few years ago when everyone was having cap issues; everyone else moved away from the cheap stuff, they didn't. In the last year or so they've put out some mighty fine boards Smile

And I miss the days when the consumer products from ECS were good, had a great board from them about a decade ago. Sadly, they've let the consumer side slip. Their professional products are still pretty good though, even IBM uses them so Wink

The P7P55 LX is a budget board with only 1 (!!!) fan header (beyond the CPU fan header). It will limit your overclocking etc..

Definitely go for a better board and i5 760.

I guess so! In which case I apologise wholeheartedly. I was just going by past experience of years-gone-by.... maybe it's time I started looking at ASRock boards for my Sandy Bridge build?

I have ASRock, it was a really great performance/budget deal ^^ Cannot complain. I'm not overclocker but the board I have has good upgrade potential...

Well in the end I went for:

Intel Core i5 760 2.8GHz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) Processor
Z Corsair (CWCH50-1) Corsair
4GB Corsair Vengeance (1x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit
Asus P7H55-M Intel H55 Motherboard

Some from my first post didnt have them in stock so I grabbed that above, It was just in my budget so I think I'm happy with it Smile

Why would you buy a 1156 system whereas you can buy a 1155 one, which rotates around the same prices as the old socket?

It's not a bad choice at all. But if I were in your shoes, I'd have definitely bought a SB-based system.

Anyway, congratz on your purchase. Smile

Why H55??? P55 is the chipset for gaming systems with more PCI-lanes, raid-support and some other differences. Although, if you're never going to run crossfire/SLI or any form of RAID (through chipset ICH10-controller) you shouldn't "suffer". The H55-chipset was designed for the CPU's with built-in GPU's that Intel released.
