[quote]While that's the competition speaking about Impulse (GamersGate is a digital PC game seller, albeit one that doesn't rely on a client like Steam or Impulse), one developer that has been selling its game through the service decided it doesn't want to be in business with GameStop -- and will yank its game as a result. Blind Mind Studios announced last week that it intends to pull Star Ruler (pictured above) from Impulse due to the recent acquisition.
"Due to a rather large list of things we detest about GameStop, Star Ruler will no longer be available for purchase on Impulse after the takeover," a statement on the game's official website reads. "We are ending sales through Impulse due to GameStop's long, negative behavior toward the PC platform and independent games. We would never have signed onto distribution through GameStop, and being forced into this situation has only made it worse for us. We feel GameStop cannot serve as the leader of a true competitor in the digital distribution market."]/quote]
I may just buy their game just because they did this

Stardock's CEO after he sold Impulse proceeded to prophesize the defeat of Steam and Valve by Impulse and GameStop: http://www.pcworld.com/article/224518-2/stardock_ceo_explains_gamestop_impulse_buy_steam_rivalry.html
Quote: | "If Impulse isn't best of breed technology, then what is, Steam?" says Wardell. "Steam is the most popular, to be sure, but technologically? Let me put it this way. The technology difference between Impulse and Steam is such that any objective developer who looked at the two would overwhelmingly...let's just say the gulf is significant enough that it's not really a 'depends on your point of view' thing."
But what I really want to know is whether Wardell thinks GameStop has a chance against a company like Valve with Steam's roughly eight-year head start. That's the million dollar question. So I ask it.
"I think GameStop's going to beat Steam, and I'll tell you why," says Wardell, putting down his sandwich. "One of the things that we do in our surveys is ask, why do you buy from Steam versus Impulse versus whatever. Over 80 percent who respond say 'price'."
"Now I can't speak for GameStop, but I know what I would do. Next time you buy something from GameStop for your Xbox 360, I'd give you some token you could use on Impulse toward a deal or sale on some other title. Pretty soon everything on Impulse is cheaper."
And if GameStop actually does manage to somehow dislodge Steam as the digitally distributed PC games leader? What's to stop them from becoming even more computer-intrusive or edging up prices?
"I don't want there to be only one," says Wardell. "But frankly I'd be surprised if Steam is still... I mean, you look at the technology Impulse adds and the resources GameStop has--well beyond Valve's--and it's really GameStop's fight to lose." |

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/33993/Interview_Why_Stardock_Sold_To_GameStop.php
Quote: | While Wardell acknowledges such proclamations of faith in him are flattering, he says he was caught off guard by the action.
"I was really surprised," he says. "By his own admission, Impulse is 25 percent of his revenue. Impulse is going to continue to function as it has. If a developer wasn't paying attention to this, they wouldn't notice any difference. … On one hand, they [say they] trust me, but they don't trust me enough to realize I vetted [GameStop]. Stardock didn't have to sell Impulse."
To demonstrate this, Wardell talks about one of the other companies that submitted a term sheet for the service. He only specifies them as a multimillion-dollar national company, but what they wanted was to use Impulse to manage licenses on an enterprise software system. The offer was rejected.
"That was an example of where we really wanted to stay with our roots," he says. "We want to see PC gaming expanded. … I feel like it's in pretty good hands. They're good guys, even if they don't agree which version of Ultima was the best." |

Im going to use a political analogy here. you know when near election you see pictures of politicians hanging out with the average joe, drinking beer, showing they can correlate with the common man? Well thats what every single person in the fucking industry acts like when they say they care about pc gaming. "oh I play pc games", "I prefer the platform" "I really like that awesome game known as deus ex", this level of bullshit propaganda that will never be true. You can apply it to everywhere nowadays. Crytek, HR devs, Gearbox, Dice, etc. Basically anyone that has to go out and say they care is full of shit. you dont say you prefer the platform, you show you prefer the platform.
So that comment about ultima? none of them probably ever played one, much less seen a screenshot.

Wait how does spending money = saving money? And whats all this Impulse has better technology bullshit? Impulse the client is a piece of shit that takes years to login and can't handle corrupt downloads. It's backup feature doesn't work and god knows what else is wrong with it. Heck I addressed the broken download (OMG CORRUPT DOWNLOAD THE WHOLE THING AGAIN HURRDURR) thing years ago to support and Stardock in it's infinite wisdom chose to do nothing. Backups are another confusing aspect. Take a backup of a game on Windows XP and try to restore it on a Windows 7 machine...oh wait, you can't. I don't use Steam's backup option often but when I do it works and every other occasion I just copy files over and force a validity check.
Steam = After many years shit works.
Impulse = After many years still as mediocre as when it first released.
I own several titles on Impulse and absolutely hate using it. There was no way in hell I would have ever bought a third party title on Impulse. Fuck you Brad for selling out. Maybe the only positive part of Gamestop taking over is they'll make Impulse stop sucking so much.

Awesome, I hope more devs follow suit.
And yeah, Impulse is fucking garbage compared to Steam. The UI is a massive pain to use, and half the games on their store isn't even available in my country. Every time I get one of those emails about an Impulse sale, most of the games I can't even buy.
I hope this leads to Impulse's downfall.

If Impulse does sink I better offline get files I can save to my PC or a CD from them because at this point even backing them up they need online activation from their stupid server.

I've been a somewhat recent supporter of Impulse and have bought several games from them in the last couple of years including Star Ruler(which is a pretty good game for the price), but this entire thing has been a slap in the face. The Star Ruler Devs summed up my opinions about this hostile takeover completely, GameStop sucks, they always have and always will.

Gamestop used to rock actually. Dunno if they ever did out there but they used to have WALLS of PC games back in the big box days. Wasn't till last year that our last gamestop took down the wall of awesome and slapped it on a shelf :[

This would only be a concern to those with flaky internet connections and even then offline mode works if you log off properly. Steam idling away uses fuck all resources unlike say a certain bloated Java apps that people have no problem running 24x7. Impulse is just a major pain in the arse. I love how Steam for instance has local third party hosted content servers...what about Impulse? None all data comes form Overseas. I have a load of quota these days but when a download failed back when I only had ADSL1 it really hurt.

I don't buy things on Impulse anymore. Got fed up of living in the UK and being told about these awesome deals that... aren't available in my country. At least Steam knows where I am and what's available here.
Such a poor service, and something that could so easily be remedied.

Lol. Think that's a bit like prophesising the defeat of Microsoft. Maybe possibly one day. But don't be waiting around or betting money on it.

Wardell is a big idiot anyway, if anyone remember the Neowin-Stardock podcasts. I wouldn't take anything he says seriously.
