|
 |
http://www.gamepron.com/news/2011/04/12/garrys-mod-catches-pirates-the-fun-way/
Quote: | A few hours ago, Garry Newman – the creator of Garry’s Mod – asked, quite innocently, whether anyone was unable to shade polygon normals.
He received a few comments, mostly jokes, but a quick look at Google suggests that there are indeed a few people who are experiencing problems with their game.
…you can hear Newman’s chuckling from here. Not the normal response to a wide-spread bug report, but this is no normal bug. It seems that the developer has deliberately enabled an error in GMod, which will only affect people who have pirated the game.
People started discussing the error on the game’s own forums, wondering why their game simply wouldn’t work:
Quote: | Problem:
I need help with my garrys mod. Everytime I launch Garrys Mod, it starts up then about 5 seconds later after it is done loading, it crashed with the
Engine Error:Unable to shade polygon normals(#################) |
Not long after posting the request, the user found themselves permabanned from the forums for using pirated software.
Making the situation even sweeter, the number which appears in brackets after the error statement is in fact the gamer’s 64-bit steamid.
Y’see, Steam keeps a list of which accounts have actually forked over the $9.99 for a legit copy of GMod – so it’s a simple matter of checking ids and turfing out the pirates.
Just another lesson on why piracy is bad, supporting indie developers is good, and why you shouldn’t mess with the nerds. |
Problem derpirates?

Reminds me of Arkham Asylum, they'd catch pirates if anyone posted about not being able to grapple into vents.

Problem with this and any type of 'protection' really is that sometimes it triggers with the original copy of the game, well more than sometimes if I remember correctly.

Oh c'mon this is one of the oldest tricks in the world,
I still painfully remember the stupid missing keycard in XIII and other Fade protection shenanigans.
And even before that there were similar mechanisms.
It still is fun, or would have been, but those pesky pirates got their accounts banned too - kinda their own fault yes, but a little mean, no?
Its hard not to notice the self-righteous smug behaviour, and immense schadenfreude of legit buyers. Well as long as its indie its fine, right, cause they're the good guys, yes?

As far as I know you launch it through a "cracked" steam client, so if they were not the moronic kind of pirate they used an empty steam account to play their pirated steam games.

Am i the only one who finds it funny that GMode used a bunch of shit from the 2003 leak Half-life 2 , that was "pirated" and all ; the creator now being against piracy.

dont know how cracked steam works, but why exactly the people who used the real id should be banned from "real" steam ?
or the cracked steam works with the same id like the normal steam ?

Cracked steam works with a real account, just like normal steam, it's just that most people use a blank account (with no games bought) just to be safe.
In the past there have been disabled accounts with many legit games because of using cracked steam.
There are also nosteam solutions (loaders), they don't actually connect to valve and don't use a real account.

That's just being new to something, you wouldn't call someone who doesn't know how to bake a cake stupid?
However I do believe that those were just some basic examples and that the avrage pirate is a moron.

Nothing wrong with a guy trying to protect his property in my opinion. I'd do the same myself really. Making your product impossible to run for actual paying customers isn't protecting your property however. Did you hear that Ubisoft?
