|
 |
Hi, I currently have 2GB DDR3 1333 RAM in my computer (Athlon II X4 - 640, HD4850 512MB, win 7 x64, I think Biostar AM3 mainboard) and was thinking about an upgrade.
I think that I have a kingston value module in there. Now the RAM prices seem to be very low and I thought about getting extra 4GB(2x2GB) of Kingston Value RAM for 36 euro. My mainboard has 4 slots.
Is there any sense in just using 4gb over 6gb because of the dual channel power increase?
And what if my memory was another brand (a-data for example). Is it possible that I'll have problems?
Strangely windows is currently reporting that the ram is the slowest part in my computer ( just 5.5 or 5.9 points on this windows benchmark). I doubt that I'll get a better ranking by increasing the amount of memory or is that included in the score too?

No, the amount doesn't matter for the score. I'd personally just stick with 4GB, because a lot of motherboards/BIOS's don't play nice with mismatching memory modules or only using one of the two channels in dual channel mode

really??? what about getting ....4 x2 gb?
Would there really be an increase in performance? Btw why is my memory rated so low?

4GB is all you need. I tried to upgrade my mobo from 4GB to 8GB 4x2GB and it kept blue screening. When it did work, I noticed no difference from 8GB vs 4GB. I sold the 4GB memory and will stick with 4GB until I build a new rig.

Limited by NB frequency
Doesn't matter much anyway. 8 GB is overkill imo, but that's just me, lots of people seem to think it's useful

I'm playing ArmA
On a serious note: The 3D rendering stuff should definitely work a lot better with more ram. After all global illumination and caustics take up a lot of ram! Especially if you render an animated scene!
So I'd love to have more RAM in my computer. 4GB will note be enough in the long run. And one more 2GB costs 24 euro, 2x2GB costs 36 euro. do the math

4GB is all you need for arma , i would suggest saving up for a new videocard with 1gb ram instead.

Well for 3D rendering you'll want an Intel CPU for starters
Sadly, AMD has got nothing on Intel when it comes to straight up power

budget limitations my fellow humpers btw, it's really fast enough for what I do If 3D cards could fully support my rendering, but that seems unrealistic, it'd be really great

ok I was an idiot and forgot to update my amazon delivery update. Hence I needed to spend 3.5 hours in the train and visit my parents (120 km trip) to get my RAM
And against assumptions here -> Windows now rated my my mem with 7.3 instead of the 5.5 before! Hah!
Oh and it seems as if I had no name buffalo ram in my computer but it's all working fine for now
Everything except HD(5.9) is rated at 7.3

Gonna bump this..
I need a quick RAM upgrade for 1-2 years or so, for my ancient mobo.
I currently have 2x2gb (Corsair XMS3) and I want to upgrade to 8gb.
- do I have to get another 2x2gb, or can I also put in one 4gb module?
- any predictions on ram prices so I can time the purchase?

I would recommend getting 2x2GB. With 3 sticks in, you may lose dual-channel benefits.

Ok, thanks..
I don't need the XMS3 again and can get the Valueselect kit right? Has the same timings but is considerably cheaper.
I checked the price dev of RAM and its on a slow but steady uphill movement. Forecasts say it may not come down again for a looong time..
