I'm not really sure whether this is a software or a hardware problem. Anyway, a few days ago I was playing Portal 2 and my computer froze. Only thing I could do was restart. Since P2 was known to have some technical troubles I didn't think much of it. Then in less than an hour I got another freeze while browsing the net. Now I get 2-3 freezes in the first couple hours that my pc is running and after that it works fine for the day. I tried cleaning the registry, defragmenting the hdd with Windows on it and also ran Prime95 for some hours and accomplished absolutely nothing. If this is indeed a hardware problem my money is on my old as dirst hard drive but I can't be sure since Windows can't find anything wrong with it. I did get a freeze while defragmenting but it could have been a coincidence since I managed to complete the defragmentation just fine later on. I'll try a virusscan and a memtest (RAM is new so unlikely to be the cause) but I doubt it'll yield any results. Would really appreciate some help!

If you want to rule out the hard-drive problem grab Hard Disk Sentinel. Nifty little app that works quite well. It will notify you of any bad sectors/general health etc.
What you're describing could very well be a hard-drive problem, as I had similar symptoms before mine gave out.

Overheating causes freezing too.

You're running your system @ stock speeds and voltages, right?

I had a similar problem recently with a faulty graphics card. The screen would freeze but everything else was running fine. It really annoyed me trying to work out what the problem was until I realised the caps lock light was still working and pressing the power key shut down the PC normally.

Thanks for the ansers! I've had a GPU give up before and while truly the freeze was similar it only happened when I was watching videos, playing games or doing something else GPU intensive so I doubt it's that. Of course I'll come back to the GPU if nothing else works. Also I have my GPU OCed slightly but I reset it to stock speeds and still got a freeze so again probably not that. I'll try hard disk sentinel.
Oh and it definitely isn't a overheating problem since that was the first thing I checked.

Sentinel or Crystal Disk Info, just have something take a look at your HDD's SMART data.
Also make sure to run Memtest to rule out your RAM; on a sidenote, instead of Prime95, run Linpack next time. That'll stress your memory at the same time

Allright Sentinel claims that HDDs are in perfect condition. Gonna try memtest. Also what would be a good program to test graphics card?
Oh and I have to run multiple instances of memtest when I have multiple CPU cores, right?

No, but I suggest that you use the proper memtest booting from a USB stick rather than the Windows thing.

Format a USB stick as FAT, download the USB key package from the page above and install it to the USB stick

Passed memtest with no errors so I guess it's either the GPU or MOBO. What do people test GPUs with these days anyway? Furmark? Crysis?

I have more or less ran out of things to do. I downgraded my GPU drivers, uninstalled a few programs I had installed around the time the freezes started, reset my BIOS and still nothing. I actually thought that I had solved the problem for a moment since I hadn't had another crash until this moment. But now, after 2 hours of playing Witcher I get a freeze while playing Planescape. I mean seriously? I'll try reseating the RAM, just in case, but it did pass Memtest so...... Clueless here...

Please test if your numlock/capslock keys still work while the screen has frozen. Is there also a sound loop? If so please post your mobo/GPU setup.

Yes there definitely is a sound loop when I'm doing something that has sound but I can't test capslock/numlock because my keyboard doesn't have lights for that. I have an ASUS P5B Plus Vista Edition board and GTX 460 1 GB.

Allright. I am not a 100% sure on this but it appears that the culprit is uTorrent. Right now I'm trying Deluge to see if it makes a difference. Obviously uTorrent is just a part of the cause since I haven't updated it in a while. I'm guessing that either Windows update has installed something that affects my internet connection or that there is something wrong with my mobo. Again, I am still in the process of confirming it but it appears that at the very least it has something to do with my internet connection.

I've had freezes caused by shitty wireless adapter drivers.

Nah the problem was definitely uTorrent. Specifically version 2.2.1.

Are you sure its uTorrent, if you have the problem again please say so. My brother has a similair motherboard namely the Asus P5E. In our case its not uTorrent since we've done a clean install several times and the problem still persisted without the existence of uTorrent. Ill also test if my brothers crash is internet related.

Yeah its defintely uTorrent 2.2.1 in my case. Went back to ver. 2.2.0 and no freezes in 3 days.
