|
 |
Until yesterday night everything was perfectly fine (temperatures were ok, as well as CPU/GPU loads), but now I come back to home, and the PC appears to be completely dead
I've tried unplugging/replugging every single cable, I removed the ram modules as well as the graphic card, but every time I press the power button all the fans start to move for approximately 1 second and then bam, no sign of activity. The wiring in my room is completely fine, so what could it be? Maybe a problem with the PSU? I've never experienced such a strange issue before..

That's either the PSU or the CPU, but my bet would be on the PSU. Don't suppose you got a spare to test with?
Have you got a multimeter by any chance? You could check the various voltages. At the very least, unplug EVERYTHING except the motherboard power and the auxiliary 4-pin CPU power plug, see if the CPU fan keeps spinning then.

No..I don't have neither a spare PSU (I'm typing this from the laptop) nor a multimeter . I'll try the third option;
Eventually I could take the PC to the repair shop in my town, at least they can try a different PSU and see if mine is broken. Thanks for help as always

Have you done any overclocking? And is your PC assembled by a single company (you've bought every part of the PC off of them and they have done the assembling)? Cause if, for instance, it's a faulty CPU, they might void your warranty because of the overclock.
BTW, have you tried clearing cmos? And have you tried changing RAM sticks' positions on the MB slots?

My PC is 4 years old and it has been assembled by myself, so no warranty :/
I've tried to do everything (changing ram's modules positions, clearing cmos, I've even changed the cables with newer ones but nothing seems to fix the problem).
@Werelds: I followed your advice and the PC is still dead :S
Anyway, I called the guy working at the repair store and brought him the PC asking to give it a look (suggesting to try a different PSU). Tomorrow I'll have the response, thanks for help and quick suggestions guys.

Will you be able to resist the urge to play or will you install ePSXe on that laptop?

Hehe thanks, luckily here I have all the "golden oldies" like Fallout 2, System Shock 2, BG2 etc. ..there shouldn't be any problem with games

I've got a spare you can use ixigia, just come over and get it. Where in Italy do you live? From here to the southern end of lake Garda is only about 1250km
Seriously though, just ask him to fetch any random PSU and see if shit starts spinning properly. Takes about 5 seconds to test, and a new PSU is a cheap fix so

Well...as expected the PSU is completely fried, and the motherboard is permanently damaged as well. The HDD seems quite fine, but it needs a complete formatting since the partitions are definitely messed up. FFUU

Yeah, it's definitely familiar ...the only difference is that actually I don't have the money to build a new PC
I'll see if I can find something cheap and reliable to replace my old P5B-e, otherwise I have to wait some months in order to buy a new rig.. :S
@human_steel: It was a Corsair HX620W, and my PC was just slightly overclocked (e6600@3Ghz, with the 4870 running at stock clocks).

That's the third ( I think ) time a member on the board had a problem with a corsair PSU.
Mine's a TX650...
Did you clean your PC on a regular basis or...?

i think TX650 is produced by a diff OEM since its one of their best selling and high quality PSUs.
i personally would sell the CPU / ram / videocard and whatever else that still works and use that to invest in a new rig, remember new CPUs and videocards have improved so much over the years and have gotten cheaper also in comparisment to playing games at max settings so it shouldnt be too expensive compared to what you paid for your previous rig.
