In RPGs my sense of accomplishments comes from exploring and taking it all in, I don't really like grinding in an area just because I get good xp in the same area all the time, one thing I don't like about newer games is that I don't find as many secret areas as in the old days when exploring, linearity kind of sucks. Also like you said I enjoy the progression of story and that keeps me going to the end. My boss battles aren't easy either since I don't level up to the max with cheats, just enough to not grind and I don't unlock all weapons until after I finish the game anyway.
