|

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/05/14/new-technology-force-video-game-consoles-extinction-evolution/#ixzz1MTy6EFEJ
Quote: | “I actually think consoles are a thing of the past,” avid gamer Mark Ormond told FoxNews.com. He confessed to playing more games on his iPhone these days than on his Wii or Xbox 360.
“Why pay $50-60 for sequels of the same games on $300 machines when I can play newer experiences elsewhere in a lot less time -- and for a lot less money -- on devices I already use more?” he asked. |
Quote: | But as non-traditional gaming platforms expand, can Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft keep doing business as usual? Do consoles even have a place in the future?
Not in the traditional sense, says outspoken gaming analyst Michael Pachter. “Gaming will move to the cloud,” he told FoxNews.com this week. And that’s a body blow for console makers, who make money on not only their own games, but hardware sales and licensing fees.
To further complicate the issue, consumers are already warming to the idea of not owning their games, production consultant Keith Fuller told FoxNews.com. “Every time someone uses Gmail, Netflix Instant, or Amazon’s Cloud Player, they’re already buying into the concept of using a service without physically owning or installing something.”
Translation: As long as they get to play their favorites, gamers won’t care how they access their games, so “established consoles will have to rethink how they operate,” Fuller adds. |
Quote: | Ormond says he’d be surprised to see either Sony or Microsoft release another traditional “game box,” the kind that just plays store-bought discs in the living room.
“I actually think new Microsoft and Sony consoles won't be what we think of today," he told FoxNews.com. "They suspect they’ll be streamed to PC, mobile, and TV. If that doesn't happen right away, I expect these next consoles to be the last made by any of these companies.”
Without ruling out that possibility, video game consultant Scott Steinberg says such a radical shift would take time. “Given their established brands, considerable fan bases and exclusive games, video game consoles will enjoy popularity for the foreseeable future,” he predicts. |

I find it pretty funny how console gamers were like "ohhh, PC gaming, so expensive!!! console gaming ftw!!!!" and now the new generation is like "ohhh, console gaming, so expensive!!! iPhone gaming ftw!!!!"

For a lot less money with shitty controls on a tiny little screen. The future is now.

The man has no idea what hes talking about.Games on handhelds and cell phones are a huge step back in technology. The games are about on par with what was offered on the game boy and game boy advance. The games are still very basic and don't offer much.

How is this about PC gaming?
These topics belong to either the general section, or by expecting the comments outcome, the jokes section or useless void.

Cloud gaming is very related to PC gaming, as it's only possible on PC (right now).

People buy them because of the price, not because of the game. For $1 who wouldn't be tempted? Who really likes BFBC2's handheld version? It fucking sucks, but the name and price got me. I've bought more games than I've played them all in minutes, because they're mostly shit. I can count on one hand the really good games that are suited to the touch experience that are worth playing. Installous as a demo program FTW. |
I disagree. I buy iPhone games because they offer gameplay optimized for quick games. Games like Mr.Ninja, Tiny Wings, Collision Effect, Cut the Rope, etc. don't work on the PC, but work well on mobile platforms.
On the other hand, you have Galaxy of Fire 2 and Real Racing 2, which are rather amazing for the mobile platform, and show deep gameplay can also be had on an iPhone of all things.

But that's the point, they are not, because they don't offer amount of content worthy of $20.
On the other hand, Real Racing 2 is $7, a notch above most games, and I think it is worth it for what it offers. Likewise for Galaxy on Fire 2 and its $10 price tag.

Well, Aralon is $10, which is also a lot for typical games in AppStore. But Aralon is nowhere near a PC game's size. Do you honestly believe Aralon has the same amount of content as The Witcher 2? And that's $45 bucks.

I don't know what you mean, Gothic 4, Fable 3, FF13 and DA2 are free games while Aralon costs $10.

I got my Android-powered HTC for like 40 bucks (retail price was around 600).
So that's a great deal, considering you can almost do anything with that.
Why would that be a step back ?
Having great little games for a bargain on a hand-held phone is nice, especially when "shitty" (stating the obvious) consoles games are overpriced and take way too much time to develop.
New phones are going to have dual-core processors, clearly not a step back when you see some little gems like Star Traders RPG.

I've bought 15-20 games on the App store - trying to keep an open mind, and wanting them to be good.
To me, they all represent a GIGANTIC leap back in time. It's like playing DOS games on a tiny screen with a fiddly interface.
Games like Aralon, The Quest, Dungeon Hunter 2, and similar are pale imitations of similar games on PC. Aralon seems to want to compete with Morrowind/Oblivion and is a sad joke in that way.
The Quest, which is probably the best CRPG I've played on a small device - is still inferior to Wizardy 7, which was released 20 years ago.
Dungeon Hunter 2 is vastly inferior to Diablo 2 - and it controls like crap.
I don't know how people can convince themselves these games are worth playing, but I guess we must have different expectations.
Smartphones are fine for little cute games like PvZ - and there's nothing in the platform that will physically prevent a strong game design from appearing eventually.
However, from a gamer perspective - it's like using a butterknife to cleave oakwood.
I'm sure if you're overworked and don't really have time to play games - it's "neat" to have a cool little device you can show to your friends, and you can talk about how the latest Unreal engine can look pretty good and so forth. But you will never, ever, escape the fact that a well-equipped PC or a modern console would be about a thousand times better for actual gameplay evolution.
The greed-train has arrived on the Smartphone station, and gaming will suffer for it. This is inevitable. But we don't have to raise our arms in support.
