http://kotaku.com/5808095/ea-is-launching-its-own-steam-competitor

Quote:
This Friday, Electronic Arts will unveil its own take on the popular online PC shopfront Steam, with the launch of a service called Origin.

According to a report on the Wall Street Journal, this service will function much like Steam, as a single store and gaming platform on the PC that will let customers "purchase, download and keep track of" their games.

It's even lifting Steam's social features, and will also feature cross-platform notifications that will "let gamers on a variety of devices broadcast messages to online friends when they defeat online opponents or accomplish other gaming goals."

So I can be eating dinner and an asshole friend message me on my phone saying he scored some mad Dragon Age loot? Wonderful.

A "hypothetical" example of this cross-platform integration would be Battlefield, with EA saying players could rack up experience points on a mobile version of the game that will count towards unlocks on the PC edition.

With the full reveal not due until tomorrow, expect more details (and a better idea of how it'll all work) then. One thing I can say now is, that name? That's one unfortunate brand revival if ever I've seen one.

good. great. fantastic. we need more of these services to make digital distribution better for gamers. we've seen how stagnant steam has gotten, there definately needs to be more competition.

just remains to be seen how they use such a system. will the prices and service be a worthwhile addition to gaming... or will it be corrupted and misused to fuck gamers over...

and one other final thing... will the system be REQUIRED for EA games now in the same way steam is required for valve games.. that'd be a bit of a concern...

I don't understand why EA didn't do this ten years ago. As a benefit and side-effect of this new service, hopefully EA will put more focus on the PC!

all that stuff is just fluff really... the last beneficial thing they brought was their cloud back in 08... thats 3 years of piddling around.

how about more reasonable pricing? how about finally implementing a buy-back credit system to address the 'issue' they see with pre-bought game sellers? you know, a way for gamers to get rid of the games they hate or are bored of in a mutually beneficial way? thats a feature ID want to see... theres so much more than needs to be done to make digital distribution better and more viable...

without competition, the best 'advancements' we'll see to the state of gaming, are more ways to sell dlc and more achievements. yay.

------------

we NEED someone to come along and finally shake up the system.

shit, i wanna see microsoft get into it as well... valves steam has had the limelight far too long and it thinks its too comfortable that it doesnt need to try anymore, and thats the attitude its shown.

hopefully that time is over, and now we'll see good things starting to happen in digital distribution.

You just aren't being fair if you think there's been barely any development.

Also
Steam Wallet - 2010
and Steam Translation Server - 2010

forgot about them.

well im sure that its good development for people that want those kinds of things.

but for me, its not giving me any real reason or incentive at all to shun store-bought games... - im sure thats the same for many others.

and if digital is supposed to be the future, then id consider that a problem...

and yes i know that this is PERSONAL opinion, im not saying that steam and its kind are failing everyone or anything.. just that it COULD be doing so much more to make digital distribution a more better alternative.

and i hope more competition is the push that is needed to get us there.

I didn't think of it at all as "what does it offer against buying from my local store" as it has become part of the retail games as well.

For example where I'll buy Duke Nukem Forever, from the Steam store or from a brick and mortar store, is irrelevant, I'll get and enjoy Steam's features anyway and that's what matters to me.

I don't like this move at all, but competition is always supposed to be good. I just wish Steam's competition would be GFWL (which should be recreated from ground up, as this iteration is console shit) The microsoft system is overly cumbersome.

Microsoft better get back in PC gaming again, or they will fucking lose out this battle as well. I hate how reactionary they have been since Gates gave up leadership.

So... What happens to all the games purchased on the EA Download manager wank? Can accounts be transferred? Or are they just hoping people will forget about that? (It is quite forgettable).

Also, ToR exclusive to Origin? Meh. I'll buy it on Origin (since I'm a Digital Distro whore Very Happy ) and just add it to my Steam games list as a non-Steam game.

Edit: The one thing I love is that Steamworks games can be bought from anywhere and activated on Steam. For me, the complaint that Steam prices suck is kind of irrelevant. Pre-Order price of Deus Ex on Steam sucks, but I pre-ordered the Augmented Edition off of Amazon for £25 quid. Where it falls down is on non-Steamworks games, but then I just see it as paying a premium for a Digital Distro service that works - flawlessly.

Yes. But since it's Steamworks, it can be bought anywhere, and activated on Steam. Hence, it can be bought far cheaper than Steam's store. Smile

consolitis, you listed gimmicks and all we care about are prices. And they suck.

No they are not gimmicks (useless).

As for the prices a) complain to the publishers ( or if you believe Valve is the one that sets the prices, then go to option b ==> ) or b) buy games when they are on sale, which is daily now? And this is not done and cannot be done in retail stores (not on this magnitude anyway), so that's a huge plus for Steam.

For example if they announced a -20% reduction of the price of all their titles it would certainly make me very very very very happy but I wouldn't say this is an innovative feature!!!1 or anything like that.

SteamPlay, SteamCloud, screenshot capturing, the completely redesigned UI etc are definitely very useful additions and improvements they have made to the service and client over the years and set it apart from its competitors.

The service's enormously fast growing popularity and the very frequent demand for all new games to at least be on Steam, if not be SteamWorks titles, that's being expressed by members of the PC gaming community on various forums should speak for itself.

Unquestionably there are a lot of people that really really like the service (not simply "tolerate" it), there must be a reason for that.

They are probably going to use it as the typical patcher that any MMO has, so I have no problem using it for that.

SWTOR was dead to me when I figured out it wasn't going to be Pre-CU SWG. Every new MMO is dead to me because they aren't Pre-CU SWG.

I'm with Consolitis on this one. Steam has become more than a digital distributer, their services are much more than gimmicks, and it will be very tough for anyone to compete with them. But every new player is more than welcome. I wish them best of luck and hope more and more join in and contribute to pc gaming with better services, better prices and hopefully better games.

When Steam starts offering competitive EU prices - I'll start considering Steam.

Until then, direct2drive.co.uk is about 50% cheaper - consistently.

Not counting sales, of course, but I don't give a shit about sales as all DDs have them.

Yes it's the only kind of "order" you can cancel at any time. After the release of a game there must be some very serious reason to get a refund.
