In terms of sheer landmass/distance to travel, two come to mind:

Morrowind and Everquest. Both are simply massive, and I'm pretty sure EQ is about 10x the sheer size of WoW in terms of landmass.

ill just say fallout 3 (already mentioned, but its worth saying again) - just for sheer scope and how FULL it was, you really felt like you were exploring.

so as far as game worlds, FO3 was just perfect to me - perfect combination of large scale and quality filling.

im also gonna say dragon age, because i felt that game had a lot to see and do in it, even though they were just bite-sized arenas, i still felt like i was traveling through a decent sized world, full of interesting things to see. unlike da2, which was like 3 rooms copy pasted a thousand times Very Happy

oh and also because i loved it so much, i gotta say witcher. the first one, not the second... you didnt get much control over traveling, but it felt big to me, it felt open and had great exploration... very fun world to explore through, and what it lacked in looting opportunities, it made up for it by feeling full of LIFE.

X3 (terran conflict probably) would be my pick

in terms of pure size nothing beats TES2 Daggerfall by a long shot but I guess that's not what you're looking for.
Except minecraft which is technically unlimited in size I suppose...

oh, and there's even a bigger one in terms of o sheer gaming space, some late 80s game where you drive a tank through snow, it's about 10 time bigger than TES II

Thread winner is you. Out of all these games, none of them come close to sheer scale of Frontier. You get an entire universe to play it Very Happy

captive on the amiga- absolutely massive, a universe to explore, coupled with the ability to land on any planet ....scariest thing about it was every game of it played differently and it fitted onto a 1.44mb floppy disk

The Amiga was awesome like that Very Happy Frontier fit on a 720kb disk - as did Captive (the Amiga 5/6/12 didn't support 1.44MB DD disks) Though it could have been the 880KB disks. Either way; Captive rocked Very Happy

~edit~

Captive II! Sigh.. I miss the Amiga days Sad

Plenty of content in Captive II;

Quote:

The game has some similarities with Hired Guns; both games have a dark cyberpunk setting. However, the object of Liberation is to find and free a prisoner by gathering clues and following leads. The game world is a very large city containing hundreds of fully explorable households, offices and public buildings. It is this vast setting which precludes a brute-force approach to finding the captive and gives rise to the unusual core gameplay element of detective work.

In line with its nominal classification as an RPG game, Liberation features typical RPG tropes such as inventories, character upgrades, shops, money, and banks. Unlike many games, almost all world features are interactive and well integrated - the libraries contain large volumes of real information you have to use, the police actually enforce the law and have working police stations and cells, the taxis are functional, and you can indeed deal drugs with the drug dealers. The gameplay is highly open ended, much like Elite and Grand Theft Auto.

It not so strange for racing game. You travel with high speed almost all the time and you need big area for that.Playing Burnout Paradise doesnt make you feel that has big area. Its normal for that kind of game.
