Valdis Story: Abysal City is a sidescrolling exploration platformer with an emphasis on intricate and rewarding combat.
Does anyone even know or waiting for this game? I'm curious because for more than 5 years I though the game is dead. I played original gameplay prototype back then in early 2008 (thanks TIG forums for finding such gem) and despite the fact it was really just a prototype I loved it. I saw the potential in it, it could turn out as very lovely Metroidvania game. Unfortunately, when I tried to reach website or contact developer(s) in any way it was not possible, web-site was dead and so is email. Usual death for many awesome indie projects.
But turned out it didn't die. In fact, it has a successful Kickstarter that was overfunded by 400% and apparently the game is coming in 2013. Here is what all of this about:
It is completely new game compare to what I played before. The basic concept and gameplay idea si similar, so is story based on the original one, but game mechanics and visual style/GFX were drastically changed. And it looks even more lovely.
Here is an old demo prototype (Valdis Story: Godslayer) v3.5 if anyone interested:http://endlessfluff.com/GAMES/vs1/vs_v3.5.zip
(keep in mind it is 7 years old and does not represent new game in any way)
For KS backers they released playable demo of Abyssal City in jan '13
Spoiler:
but unfortunately, there is no way to get anymore: I couldn't find option to pay via pay-pal (besides, a year passed since funding goal was reached) and didn't get a reply to my email and KS message. I went back to TIG forums to find an old friend who shared my interest with the game back then - turned out he is a backer so I got lucky here
Alright, I finished new demo and I must say there is alot ofthings were changed in gameplay mechanics. First, they changed movement aspects, now you don't need to double tap direction key to activate running, it is always on. Second, there is now 2 attack buttons: one for light and one for heavy blow. Before, you had to tap for light attack and hols a bit for heavy blow. Also, now you can use heavy combo as well. Removed some exploits as well, like "sword jump".
Everything else seems to be the same except SFX, all stocks were replaced with original.
Also, I was wrong, demo seems to be cantoning all the content but not sanity check is even mroe strict, old trick with savefile editing does not work: if you load the location id/coordinates that not supposedto ebavailable - you are being reported automatically back to closes "white" area. If you manage to get somewhere where you aren't supposed to be in normal way - things either don't work or usual "Demo ends here" screen appears and then game resets.
I assume it is also related to file "Valdis Story AC DEMO.yydebug" - if anyone know how to bypass these limitations I'm all ears.
Old content works with new exe but not vice versa.Technically, it is possible to male combination of both versions to access new areas but I don't know how yo unpack gamemaker8 pack.
Taking into account the fact that it was in development for 7 years - I guess the time has come, haha.
Keep in mind though, that it was already delayed twice: from jan 2013 to jul 2013 and from July to September. Could be another delay as well. But let's hope there won't be any.
I guess that's the curse of indie games... when you're on a small team, with a small budget and no taskmas... umm.. publisher cracking the whip, development can really take a long time.
Heh Desura downloaded a self extracting archive, guess there's no copy protection then since you can just unpack that with Winrar and run the game.
EDIT: Oh and it's a beta version apparently.
EDIT: Played until the first save shrine (Was wondering how to save the game.) I really like the artwork and animations, it feels very fluid or how to say.
So far the level I'm running around in has all sorts of side paths but many of them are locked by various means from some nearby device to keys probably held by more powerful creatures, it kinda reminds me of a Castlevania game (PS1 I think.) I saw a playhrough of a few days ago where the area was fully open for exploration but you needed certain items to progress through key locations.
Music is really good too or at least I'm really liking it.
Yep, it is very Castlevania like, as I mentioned above few times.
The BETA caption is there because I believe they forgot to remove it. So far no big changes from KS demo and public demo, except polishing and SFX. Altho, HARD mode became easier, huh.

The awesome thing about DRM-free games is that they actually go "unreleased" longer than ones that need cracking. You should see it on WBB, so many games released on GOG/Desura that are completely absolutely DRM-free and it can take days before someone uploads the installer. I've uploaded half a dozen games on WBB that weren't anywhere else on the web at the time.
