Incognito - Episodes 1, 2 & 3

  • Official web page: LINK
  • Developer: Magrathean Technologies
  • Genre: Multi; RPG, FPS, RTS, Space Sim
  • Release date: Episode 1: May 4th, 2009. Complete bundle: 29th May, 2011
  • Story/Description:
    Quote:

John Smith (generic name, you can choose your own) is a man in trouble. He’s lost everything he has in the Stock Market, his house is in danger of being washed away due to erosion. All he has is a life insurance policy. Depressed and despondent, he decides to end it all. Climbing to the top of his office building. A split second before he hits the ground, a wormhole opens up, and he vanishes! John awakens in a strange place. It’s clearly a high-tech world, but he can’t read any of the writing or understand the language he’s hearing. What’s going on; is he dead and in Hell?

Incognito is meant to deliver simplified versions of gameplay from different genres and bring them together into a game that's epic in scale and requires different genre skills but is easy for the average hardcore gamer to jump into and play from beginning to end.

These genres change at each "zoom level" of the game:

When you're on foot, it's a First-Person Shooter with RPG elements
When you're in your ship, it's a Space Trading/Combat Simulation
When you're in low orbit of a planet, it's a Simple Real-Time Strategy Game
When you're in your hovertank, it's a Tank Combat Game

In order to progess through each Episode, you'll have to conquer challenges at each level, gathering information on foot, exploring in your ship, landing on uninhabited planets and establishing bases, and on hostile planets, invading a planet's surface defenses in the hovertank.

  • Multiplayer: NO
  • System requirements:
    Quote:

    Minimum
Processor: Pentium 4 2.8 GHz (3.2 GHz for Vista), Core 2.0 GHz (2.2 GHz for Vista), Athlon 2800+ (3200+ for Vista)
RAM: 1GB (1.5GB on Windows Vista)
Video Card: GeForce 6800 GT, Radeon 9800 Pro (Radeon X800 Pro for Vista)
    Video Memory 256MB
    Diskspace : 3GB
    Sound: DirectX 9.0c Compatible
    Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7
    DirectX: DirectX 9.0c

  • Release folder name: Incognito-RELOADED/rld-incg/1.84GB
  • NFO file: LINK
  • Protection: Activation.
  • Multilanguage: NO - English
  • News article: Addicted Gamer
  • Preview: Rock, Paper, Shotgun
  • Review: Out of Eight - Episode 1 Review
  • Review: Out of Eight - Episode 2 Review
  • Demo: Magrathean Demos
  • Screenshots: Episode 1 Screenshots
  • Screenshots: Episode 2 Screenshots
  • Screenshots: Episode 3 Screenshots
  • Trailer: ModDB Videos

I'd never even heard of this, despite it being out since May 2009... but it certainly sounds VERY interesting. Obviously not a AAA title by any means, but the premise sounds good. Reloaded just released the entire bundle (so far) of all three episodes, with Magrathean currently working on Episode 4. Each episode is $9.99 to buy.

The trailer for Parkan ][ was pretty laughable too, but the game itself is rather fun... in a "Western-European budget title" kind of way Laughing

How stupid must one be to tackle multiple playstyles and genres when most devs have trouble with combining two?

Space Rangers tackles three distinct playing styles.... and does it rather well, if I might add.

As long as the gameplay is good I couldn't care less if it looked like Pong.

Eh... not really sure how Reloaded's crack works on this. It's a single DLL plus a batch fix (for missing folders) but the game still demands a key otherwise it gets locked in demo mode.

Doh, sorry... didn't see it >_<

@Areius

Nice trolling. That's an inventory screen.

 Spoiler:

Just started playing and the visuals are about on-par with games like System Shock 2. It's a very budget title, no mistake about that, but it has some interesting gameplay ideals. I'm going to continue and I'll add more thoughts later.

I knew these games already, they definately looked interesting, but I've never played them. Looking forward to hearing some opinions.

I'll post up some proper impressions later, I'm busy with MK9 at the moment (Smoke baby!) but a short summary;

Visuals are poor, that much is a given, at the BEST of times they're maybe on par with System Shock 2. The audio is good, seems to sample a lot of SS2's sounds too, but the voices are... well... budget Very Happy I think the real shortcoming of the game is the space section, it just controls too strangely to be much fun - and the view angle is massively skewed which makes it a bit harder. No cockpit cam, sorry guys, and I don't recall seeing any kind of space combat either.. it's solely a vehicle to get from Planet A to Planet B and back, either trading or in search of elements. Planetside missions are pretty fun, but basic like the rest of the game; you build a small base, harvest elements, defend yourself with controllable Hover Tanks, and that's about it. FPS mode is budget, but huge - with a lot of exploration and interactivity. I can't really comment on the story yet, I've only just discovered enough elements to repair the heat shield (basically the first tutorial areas)

On the whole; Ultimately flawed, but not exactly failing either. If you like Parkan II, you'll enjoy this.

i played this for excruciating less than 15 minutes. in this time, the game paints graphic worthy at a brain damaged level. Sad

from the mechanical, low quality voice reading to the absolute horrible interface design, this 'game' has it all. Crying or Very sad

it doesn't have xb360 pad support but does have 2560x1600 support. although, the graphic is so terrible it doesn't really matter. Rolling Eyes

i got tired of walking around in the black world filled with grids and low poly, utter trash 'graphics.' Mad

this sucker is going into uninstall hell which is not soon enough. Twisted Evil
