|
 |
http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/07/07/august-cover-revealed-dishonored.aspx
History lesson: Arkane is Arkane, Harvey Smith was one of the game designers of Deus Ex (and other legendary titles), and Viktor Antonov was the art director of Half - Life 2 (and the cancelled "The Crossing" game)
Also Bethesda is providing their help:
"Bethesda Softworks believes in their vision and is giving them all the time, money, and development help (regular meetings with guys like The Elder Scrolls' Todd Howard don't make your game worse) they need."
Genre: Stealth Action FPS
Quote: | We've seen the game running, and now we share Colantonio and Smith's vision too. Dishonored is the antithesis of a edge-of-your-seat roller-coaster ride. It's a game about assassination where you don't have to kill anyone. It's a game about infiltration where you can set up traps and slaughter the entire garrison of an aristocrat's mansion rather than sneak in. It's a game about brutal violence where you can slip in and out of a fortified barracks with nobody ever knowing you were there. It's a game about morality and player choice where the world you create is based on your actions, not navigating conversation trees. |
No platforms, no release date announced yet.. but I am already hyped!
PS The concept art images are very half-life-y.

The (unintentional?) irony of this statement is not lost on me.

A Stealth Action FPS made by such respectable people/studios? I'm hyped
Let's hope for some vital infos soon (i.e. console only/exclusive or multiplatform, etc.)

morality and player choice... man thats always a slippery slope isnt it?
so many games have tried it, but teh more you try and involve the player in guiding their development and that of the game world, the more open it always seems to get to feeling 'empty' and shallow...
i would really love a game that finally gives a really solid morality based experience though... that does sound damn sweet.

were deusex/thief/hitman empty?
things like morality don't need to be involved in the actual gameplay beyond simple value variables triggered by specific actions the player does, like killing, maintaining stealth, theft, etc, and then branch dialogue and events according to that value
description sounds a lot like scifi hitman/thief
hope harvey learned from dx2

Harvey has admitted they completely fucked DX:IW (Warren not so much, till this day he says he's proud of that game):
Quote: | We fucked up the technology management, we had bad team chemistry, we wrote the wrong renderer, we wrote the wrong kind of AI and then we shipped too early. The story was even bad... we moved it into the future, and we didn't realize this at the time, but it undermined a lot of what made Deus Ex great--the familiarity, the groundedness. We moved it further into the future and it started to feel like the Jetsons. I think we made an 85% rated RPG that was not a worthy sequel to the original game. |

Not exactly. A few years back, I read an article where Warren Spector said that he regretted being too much away from the guys on the floor on DX:IW. He got a higher position so he didn't have enough time to take the reins in the day to day development.

I fucking love Arkane Studios and their games! So this is what they were doing since they put The Crossing on hold... sounds really interesting, waiting for more. I have a lot of faith in Arkane that they won't make some derp game, but a masterpiece like their previous games (as much as one can have these days I mean...).

They were also developing LMNO concurrently with The Crossing and HL2:EP4 before that. All three titles have been canceled

Interesting... but why are they downplaying the significance of dialogue??

Well, looking at the choices it promises, and the people involved, this could out-deus-ex deus ex. I fucking loved Arx Fatalis. I do hope though, that it has at least as many RPG elements as DXHR.

If they're doing what I think they're doing, fantastic.
Not sure I like the STRONG HL2 vibe, though, as I'm not a big fan of the franchise.
