Garus, are you downloading anything when you start the games?? It has happened to me as well on many occasions. Try pausing all your downloads and then start the game.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

this has happened to me before, and in the past its been because the game has required an update, but fucking steam hasnt done the download yet, and hasnt even attempted to initiate one yet. it is most frustrating, steam really is a bastard of a program.

Reboot your PC and stop all downloads (torrent, http, pause steam dloads). Then try running the games.
1 and 2 are still amazing.

The same thing happened to many users too during the December sales; the most common advice was to wait until sales were over since Steam Content servers were heavily overloaded with purchase requests etc.

Same here, couldn't restore GTA: EFLC and AVP from a backup.
It would warn me that the servers were too busy, but immediately start the download anyway...
