Why do you need the laptop on the lecture sessions then?

Get yourself a lenovo. I have a T410 from work (i5 the fastest one,4GB RAM) and a slightly bigger battery in it (9cell) and if I turn of wifi and work on lower brightness it reaches >10 hours. If you have wifi or do some gaming it'll go down to 7 hours. And if you really play on it maybe 3 hours?
Keyboard is very good and the trackpoint is pretty cool if you get used to it. + they have some nice features (like an extra light for the keyboard so that you can work in the dark, multi touch touchpad, very solid and durable, gyro sensor to prevent damage to harddisk) and a nice display

I'm waiting for these. Sadly, production will only start in September.
They're what Intel calls "Ultrabooks" - so far ASUS are the only ones who have showed some images of theirs.

I would wait for the new Intel UltraBooks. These seem to be from the ground up built with battery life and size in mind, while retaining the performance of normal laptop CPUs.
Edit: @Werelds

Great minds and such, right Leo? ^^
But yeah, these things promise to be pretty amazing. I personally have one of these right now, and I don't want anything bigger or heavier anymore. With it being just 1 kg it's just perfect for taking to meetings and such. Only downside to mine is that because it's one of the early ones, it's pretty weak; I have run into some RAM issues when compiling some bigger projects before. More annoying is the piece of shit "GPU" in it (GMA 4500 HD) which is just terrible compared to..well anything :/
The new integrated GPUs are lightyears better and I wouldn't be surprised if some of these will have something along the lines of a GT340M in them which should fix all of those issues.

Any other suggestions? |
If I had to buy now, either a Dell XPS 15z or Dell XPS 15 L502x would probably be my choice.

Don't believe that, the Pavilion line are terrible. Considering your budget, look for something alone the lines of the XPS or some "business" models. Better build quality, usually an option for a bigger battery.

2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 Processor + 15.6" Display, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 Graphics
This combo will never give you 8 hours. Sorry.

Awesome looks, build quality and performance = POS? It is expensive however.

And any respectable PC gamer would buy a kickass desktop at that price.
IF I already had a monster desktop and tons of money, well, might as well go the extra mile:

The blue color defiles that POS.
