|

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-08-16-single-player-only-games-gone-in-3-years
Quote: | Right now you sit in your living room and you're playing a game by yourself – we call it the sp mission or the single-player campaign. In a world with Facebook I just don't think that's going to last. |
Quote: | "We're talking five, 10 years out. I believe three years from now, if you aren't doing that, you are being criticised in your reviews for your lack of innovation." |
Quote: | Sitting alongside Cerny on the panel was Sony president of Worldwide Studio, Shuhei Yoshida, who said that in the future, all games will have social elements because hardware will be connected.
"I believe almost every electronics device will be connected," he said. "It's going to be very natural to have the social connectivity behind your game. So, whether or not it's a real-time, synchronous, head-to-head game or traditional single-player game, you could be connected to the world."
"A game without the presence of other players in it – you go out three or five years, I believe that is unthinkable given how connected we're becoming," Cerny concluded. |
Uh huh, yeah.

Steamcast interview in 2009:
Quote: | Now, like I said, Team Fortress 2 is where we’re furthest along in terms of understanding those kinds of issues but whether it’s Portal or Half-Life or any of our other single-player games where you need to be able to do these things; regular updates, the partnership with your community, the cross-media generation – that’s just as applicable to those as it is to our multiplayer games. We’ve just gotten further down the road with our multi-player games but we need to do exactly the same kinds of things with our single-player games as well. I also think that over time you’ll see there are lots and lots of distinctions between single-player and multi-player experiences. Your single-player experiences are going to have to scale up to include you and your friends because there’s such a strong social component. Whatever’s fun by yourself, it’s probably going to be more fun if you can drag some of your friends along into it. I don’t think you can continue to have the super-simplified world and story-structures that multi-player games have and be able to get away with it. We need to combine the richness of the worlds and authored experiences of the single-player games and allow for more people to participate in that and that’s a big design challenge. Either way, you’re going to need to figure out how to update it really frequently, pull the audience into the participation and creation of it and then also figure out how to make movies and comics around that. |
The Final Hours of Portal 2:
Quote: | Today the industry is abuzz about Facebook games and mobile games on devices like the iPad. Valve has neither. But online gameplay, like the co-operative campaign in Portal 2, will surely be important in the future. In fact, Portal 2 will probably be Valve's last game with an isolated single-player experience. What this all means is something Newell is still trying to figure out, but he knows Valve needs to continually innovate by placing both short- and long-term bets. |
Youtube interview with Gabe Newell:
Quote: | I think what we're trying to talk about is the fact is not that we're not thinking about single-player games-Portal 2 I think is a pretty good example of what we've learned over the years in terms of how to create those [single-player] experiences.
It's more that we think that we have to work harder in the future. That entertainment is inherently increased in value by having it be social, by letting you play with your friends, by recognizing that you're connected with other people.
Single-player is great, but we also have to recognize that you have friends and wanted to have that connected as well.
It's not about giving up on single-player at all. It's saying we actually think there are a bunch of features and capabilities that we need to add into our single-player games to recognize the socially connected gamer. Every gamer has instant messaging, every gamer has a Facebook account. If you pretend that that doesn't exist, you're ignoring the problems that you're taking on.
It's single-player plus, not ‘no more single-player.' |
You might want to read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demon%27s_Souls#Online as an example of how SP games can/will be enhanced with social connectivity.

Single player games will inevitably fade away since nobody has interest in them anymore, and social gaming will finally receive all the attentions that it deserves. For a better future.

It doesn't say there'll be no single player games, just no single player ONLY games, and I think he's not far off. They will get rarer and rarer.
Its also the best anti-piracy method if you ask me. Have online authentication for multiplayer, people buy the game to play online. Non-intrusive and it works, as done for years.

LULZ its like someone would say Books would die because of the movie industry
the only thing pissing me today, are that games are the same length as a movie 3h max , have the same visual quality as one but damn ... sometimes i would say fuck the graphics give me FUN
but yeah if we look from the side of the economic industry ... show me what games sell more , there are only Two FPS with a good Online and Story Based Games that Build the HYPE [Longest Journey , La Noir, Hard Rain]

If you watch "Let's Play"s or Total Biscuit's "WTF is..." videos on youtube you are already a social gamer.
If you discuss games on this forum you are already a social gamer.
If you are uploading gameplay clips on youtube you are already a social gamer.

Dota 2 looks like it'll be the first step in this direction:
Quote: | Second, interactive guides will allow players to do more than just read a guide for their favorite hero that has been deemed helpful by the community at large. Valve plans to allow guide-makers to tie their work back into the game by doing things like highlighting suggested item purchases or displaying useful information during a match. |
A player that creates guides for the community will be able to actually create interactive guides directly in the game world.
One day gamers of Steam/Source games will be able to put commentary nodes in the game world, "post-it" notes with tips, tutorials etc, stream video directly from the game to all followers of their channel live, etc.
This is from a 2010 interview with Valve's project manager Erik Johnson:
Quote: | When it comes to longevity of gameplay and long-term monetization of customers, how viable are single-player gaming experiences like this one going to be in the long term?
EJ: I think there is an interesting question in how many projects should be offline products and how long that is going to be viable. Half-Life 1 was a really offline product. I think customers want to find ways to talk about the thing that they are a big fan of with other people, and ideally experience it the same way.
That doesn't mean every game needs to be multiplayer. With single player games that were completely in a box, and there was no way to experience anything else, I think there are things that customers want that those games don't take advantage of.
That could just mean that you want to be able to chat with other people who are playing through the same part of the game as you, or the fans can write commentary nodes in the game and everyone can experience those to take advantage of the fact that there is a huge community of people that want to interact with each other.
I still think the analysis that every product needs to be a competitor in multiplayer, or an MMO, is incorrect; there are a lot of people who want an experience without the stress, so I don't see that changing. |

I dont +2.
Besides if i did, i was living to get other ppl attention, my satisfaction would come from theyr approval and my rage from theyr disaproval. I dont. Call me selfish, or i just like to have fun with myself.
(besides the ADD MMO, course )
@consolitis: IMO a social gamer plays with ppl, a gamer can talk with ppl about games he plays, but that doesnt makes him a "social" gamer. You can be a solo gamer and brag about it, no?

I'm with tonizito. The absolutely preposterous notion that TALKING about games makes people "social gamers" is... well... exactly that; preposterous and laughable.

People who say things like that irk me quite a bit. As my team and I work hard every day, even through all the stress, we are working, very hard to make a decent single player experience in today age.
It's assholes like this, that really make me want to punch a wall (Very lightly) sometimes.
