Hey people,

I'm not sure where to post this Topic on this forum, but i guess i'll give it a try here.

I've got a question about Steam. I've never played a (cracked) game before that needs to have Steam installed in order for it to run. I don't have Steam and don't know what to do. I don't want to use Steam in any sort of way, but i do like to run these games. Can i simply download and install Steam from the official website and basically never run it afterwards? Thanks in advance for any help given.

Most of the cracked Steamworks games does not require steam to run.

You don't need Steam, those games come with crack files that you copy over just like a non-Steam release.

I opened Steam to see
all of the games on sale
I can't believe my luck
"payment transaction failed"
All I want is to download
all these super awesome games
it's like the program knows that
So tell me who's to blame

I always feel like
Gabe Newell's watching me
Tell me is it just on Steam?
Whoa-o-oh

Of course. I rarely fire up steam nowadays - only when I want to play a bit of Valve's multiplayer games. I even use cracks for the few games that I own on steam so they are faster to load Very Happy I imagine people who play isodemo singleplayer games exclusively don't need steam at all.

Yeah, normally that's the case, but apparently not with certain Skidrow releases. From what i've found out forums, comments etc. (in search on why i can't get Transformers: Fall of Cybertron to launch), these games apparently need to read installed Steam files on your PC. You don't need to use or run Steam, but have it installed for the files. I just don't know whether installing regular official Steam is good enough.

That reminds me a friend who didn't want to install Steam on his gaming PC because of the resources it may use.

But having the whole Norton software suite, all ACER's toolbars and utilities, Asus live update and such running wasn't an issue for him Laughing

It's not, but i don't want Steam, don't wan't to have Steam accounts and basically don't want to have anything to do with Steam. Razz Apparently i don't have a choice, but then at least i would like to minimize it's use on my PC as much as possible.

So install it, make sure you don't have it autostart with Windows and then forget about it? Seems simple enough to me. Razz

Steam does nothing but sit there when installed. It goes in it's own folder and doesn't affect your system at all. It's the same as installing an app.
I was dead against Steam for a number of reasons but installed it last year for a retail game, then the summer sales started... now I have over 250 games on it Sad

I've only had 2 problems with Steam, running a cracked version of Spiderman reported corrupt saves when Steam was still running, forgot to turn it off, quit steam and reloaded, all was good.
ARMA 2 felt it needed to redownload itself due to some shitty bug with the game in Valve's system, which was quite annoying.
Oh, and the steam client crashed once.

In the HL2 days Steam was awful, but it was well worth it for the updates/mods working as they should (compared to the getto pirated versions).

Today it's great.

Hahaha! I often forget about games I've bought on sale, then later notice I've still got 30GB+ of their ISOs grinhurt

... and yes, Steam back in 2004-2005 was terrible.

Steam loading GIF

That speaks for itself, really.

Very Happy I owned 25 titles on Steam July 2012 (been around since December 2003). Then a wild summer sale appeared... 299 titles today xD

Actually during the release of HL2 Steam was pretty good. Should have been around during the release of the first Steam client. Deleting clientregistry.blob on a daily basis. Organising (official and practice) clanwars was a pain in the a**, because they released new clients during the evening hours when usually the wars took part. Of course high speed internet wasn't available at that time. So downloading a few MB took some time. I still had ISDN during these days ... 7KB/s ftw Smile
