In the effort of educating myself and gaining higher understanding I'm looking for the games that people actually consider great for the PS2.
The requirement here being that you actually played the game and not just read about it on wikipedia.
Writing why it's great, or why you like it, is a plus but not a requirement.

To elaborate on my reasoning. I have played every single RPG on the PC, c64 and Amiga and theres quite a lot, I have been actively playing these games since the eighties.
Traditionally I've looked down upon stuff like Final Fantasy, as a lot of it doesn't make sense to me; teens saving the world and being emo all the time.

While something like Disgaea has alot of this anime art "shonen" that I sometimes dislike I quite enjoy that series as it doesn't take itself seriously and makes quite a bit of jokes about the genre.
Add to that the fact that those games are really about numbers, and I'm a numbers guy I like my RPGs with numbers, be they dungeon crawlers or isometric, even more so when they're tactical and strategic at the same time with seemingly unlimited depth.

That, in my opinion, cannot really be said about something like Final Fantasy, certainly not the later games in the series, though I quite enjoyed IV, V and VI, with the last one being my favorite. But thats on entirely different systems so not really relevant here.

I have in large part not been keeping up with the releases on the PS2 nor the PS (PSone) and would like a list of what the nfohump community considers the best of the respective systems.
I will try out those that sounds interesting to me and thus educating myself and my understanding of these games and possibly not be as quick to hate on them - which never really accomplishes anything outside of personal satisfaction in some special cases like remakes/reboots of established franchises.

Also this list will help other nfohumpers in knowing which games to try out on the respective systems.
If /v have their own list why shouldn't we?

tl;dr
post the, in your opinion, best PS2 roleplaying games here, if possible write why they're great. This includes SRPGS (Strategy RPGs)

I would note that trolling in this thread would be counter productive and will result in a medium sized banhammer.

Disgaea 1 & 2, Makai Kingdom, La Pucelle Tactics, Phantom Brave - I just love this stuff!!!
Persona 3 & 4 - I like the style, the characters, the story and the contrast between day and night gameplay!
Suikoden 3 - Strange art style but the story and characters are awesome. also has challenging combat
Final Fantasy 10 - I really enjoyed the story and the high amount of content it had (Pal/International)
Valkyrie Profile 2 - Unique and awesome combat system and out-of-combat platforming, good story and graphics
Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne - It got me into SMT... unique setting, tough combat, great story
Front Mission 4 - The last real front mission released outside of japan.. it was awesome! Sad
Star Ocean 3 - Weird art style but a really interesting story! Great signature Star Ocean real-time combat

Yep, Makai Kingdom got me interested in Disgaea in the first place and after that I tried out La Pucelle Tactics too Smile I'll definitely give the rest a look as well, though maybe with Final Fantasy X being the exception - one step at a time Razz

Yeah, check out the SMT games for sure.

The whole twist with gathering and fusion of demons is pretty cool. Often with doomsday around the corner and sometimes even after doomsday gives a nice eerie setting.

Surray already mentioned a couple.

Here is another example (devil summoner 2):

And here is a cool site that covers many of the SMT-games.

You're right, I thought the PS2 version was a remake with extra stuff. Guess it's time to dust off my ps2 and play this one. grinhurt

Also, the reason this didn't came out on the PC is because Sony published Drakan - TAG. Can't say the same thing for Summoner 2 witch was published by THQ, and was released on GC as well.

Hadn't really considered that, well I'll see how it looks and if I can stand it Razz It came with a component cable though that should atleast be better than the standard scart.

Honestly, it's pretty bad with some non-HD consoles on recent TVs.

the thing is tube Tvs give you 720x620 image and its blow out by the tube ... the bigger the tube the bigger the image like 40'' old TV can give you crystal clear image from a DVD/VCD/SVCD/VHS/BETA_MAX/RMVB/XVID and any console that outputs to max 576i like AMIGA/Comadore/Atari/PS1/Ps2/Xbox1 and sadly WII ... yes WII is a SD console

the only way to have a normal IMAGE of crystal from those old consoles... you have to change the image to 4:3 , set the Image setting to Movie and disable Sharpness Filter on your HD TV

How good is Rogue Galaxy btw?
I heard good things about it but it came so late in the life of the PS2 and I never got to play it.
Is it worth going back to it?

Front Mission 5(srpg) My favorite game on the system. I thought it had the best story(and wrap up) of the the series, whether you followed it in its entirety or not. It also has the best gameplay of all the Front missions, combining the best of 1-4. Customizable skills for the pilots, wanzer(mech in FM speak) customization, optional simulator missions to get money, skills, rare items. If you ever played FM3 and was put off the very childish protagonist and dialogue, you owe yourself to give this a try.

Since it was never release outside Japan, pick up the fan translation here http://frontmission.info/wiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Downloads. Note that it is a translation, and not a localization.

Close second would be SMT Nocturne for the story, gameplay, and sheer difficulty until you get the familiar with the press turn system and fusion.
